Subject: St. Louis News and Events for the week of August 3

(the blog version of this can be found at

Hi all,

Of course the big news this week are the primaries on Tuesday! In the
grand scheme of things, voting in these local elections can be as
important for the long-term goal of creating a true progressive
movement as voting in national races. Please do your part and vote!

This week's events:

Monday, August 4, 7 PM: The monthly steering committee meeting for
the St. Louis Instead of War Committee will be at the World Community
Center at 438 N. Skinker. All are welcome!

Tuesday, August 5, all day: The primaries! Get out and vote! If you
haven't educated yourself on all the candidates yet, call up someone
you trust and get the scoop! If anyone is interested, please feel
free to use the wall or discussion boards to share or ask for
information in the next few days.

Wednesday, August 6: The National Director of Technology and Liberty
for the ACLU will be speaking in St. Louis on "Privacy in Balance:
Stopping the Surveillance Society" at the ACLU HQs at 454 Whittier
Street. It's 6:30 - 8 PM. More info can be found at:
http://www.insteadofwar.org/site/calendar/events.php?id=E4471 and you
can sign up for the event at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=20369575748 .

Also Wednesday, starting at 5:30 PM. This year's annual Observance of
the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings will be at the Missouri Botanical
Center prior to the Botanical Center's monthly concert. You can find
more details at
http://www.insteadofwar.org/site/calendar/events.php?id=E4469 and sign
up at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=61270570603 .

Thursday, August 7: In previous messages I've mentioned the monthly
networking party "Green Drinks" for environmentally-friendly night
owls. But what about those ever-marginalized "morning people" I so
often here about? Sounds like they'll now have a chance to do some
green networking of their own at this month's "Green Breakfast" at the
Whole Foods Market in Town and Country. Details are at
http://stlouisgreen.com/calendar/event.php?id=145 .

Friday, August 8: Fans of the Daily Show might be interested in
checking out comedian Lewis Black at the Fabulous Fox at 8 PM. The
full scoop is at
http://www.fabulousfox.com/shows_page_single.aspx?usID=86

Saturday, August 9, 6 to 9 PM WashU Professor Denise Ward-Brown, will
be presenting some of her short films at the Blackworld History Museum
Film Festival at 2505 St. Louis Avenue. More details are at
http://www.art-stl.com/artszipper/Event.cfm?event=Film%20Shorts%20by%20Dr%2E%20Denise%20Ward%20Brown&eid=D08C6BCA-3048-7A03-39E9CB0968A0C905

Sunday, August 10. This Sunday, like every Sunday, a group of people
gather to mark the human toll of the Iraq War. The group gathers at 7
PM outside of St. Francis Xavier Church on the corner of Grand and
Lindell. The full details are at
http://www.insteadofwar.org/site/calendar/events.php?id=E4258

Monday, August 11. The St. Louis West County Dems are holding their
monthly meeting on the topic of "A Moratorium on Executions in
Missouri" from 9:30 to 11:30 in the morning. The details are at
http://blog.showmeprogress.com/event.do?eventId=44 .

Some additional news:

(1) It looks like we're going to be holding a "Activist Training Camp"
for student groups sometime in mid-September, with the help of Jobs
with Justice and some other local groups. We've already got groups
attending from WashU, SLU, UMSL, and Webster, and we're looking for
more. Please contact me if you're interested in hearing more about
it.

(2) A new facebook group has been formed for Missouri Immigrant and
Refugee Advocates (MIRA): you can join it at
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19128333238 .

(3) Looks like there's a big rally coming down the pike in support of
Anheuser-Busch employees, in advance of contract renegotiations with
InBev. Be on the lookout for an invitation from me with the event
details.

Have a fun and meaningful week,

Adam
