Subject: St. Louis News and Events for the week of August 17
(a blog version of this message can be found at

Since school is starting up next week, this will probably be the last
week I send out event listings on this "Activists in St. Louis for
Summer '08" group. However, I'm going to create a new, more permanent
group that continues to send out weekly event listings, so look for an
invitation for the other group soon. I've gotten a lot of positive
feedback for the weekly events, and I hope the new group can continue
to keep people informed of some of the great stuff going on around
town.
Before getting to the exciting events this week, I have a few
requests. First, please email KDHX at nico at kdhx.org and ask them to
restore Democracy Now to its full hour on the radio. Democracy Now
covers a lot of stories that the traditional media is either too
corrupt or too ignorant to report on, and it would be a real shame to
lose this source of information in St. Louis. Second, it looks the
the Student Activist Training will be on September 20, so if you're
part of a student group and are interested in participating, please
let me know. And finally, a group of people will be driving up to St.
Paul, Minnesota for the big protest outside the RNC on September 1st.
Please send me a message if you're interested in going up there (we'll
be back by late Monday night).
So, this weeks events:
Monday, August 18: If you thought you were cool because you could
drink liberally or enjoy a green drink, you will be thrilled to find
out that you can now do both at the same time! This month, Drinking
LIberally and Green Drinks are combining forces to double the
metaphysical significance and networking potential of consuming
alcoholic beverages. The event goes from 6:30 to 9 PM at the Schlafly
Bottleworks and you can RSVP at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=33478726538 .
Tuesday, August 19: Join the St. Louis Moveon.org council for a Clean
Energy Rally at Kiener Plaza at noon. We know energy is going to be
an important issue in the upcoming elections, so this is a great
chance to speak out in favor of sustainable solutions. You can find
the event details at
http://moveon.org/event/events/event.html?event_id=49895 .
Also Tuesday, The St. Louis Amnesty International reading group will
be meeting at the Hartford Coffee show to discuss the book Five Years
of My Life: An Innocent Man in Guantanamo, by Murat Kurnaz, at 7 PM
Wednesday, August 20: I can't find anything in particular for
Wednesday night, so maybe it'd be a good night to go biking! You can
find a couple of biking options at the Trailnet site:
http://www.trailnet.org/calendar.php .
Thursday, August 21: The Community Arts and Media Project is having a
book and zine sale to make space for a new etching printer. According
to the message, there will be "Books of all colors, varieties,
textures, and smells!" You can find the event details and more clues
to this enigmatic statement at
http://www.insteadofwar.org/site/calendar/events.php?id=E4476 .
Friday, August 22: People with a lot more bread than myself can check
out the "Clean Air Affair", a fundraiser for the American Lung
Association featuring local and organically grown foods. It's $60 for
general admission. If you have some solid disposable income, you can
find out more at http://www.mrsnv.com/evt/home.jsp?id=2100 .
Saturday, August 23: One of St. Louis's great annual events, the
Festival of Nations, is this weekend in Tower Grove Park, starting at
10 AM. The event always has great food, music, and shopping. RSVP at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=12786286757
And dont' forget to keep an eye out for that invitation in a couple days!
Have a fun and meaningful week, & rest of the summer,
Adam
