Subject: STN and Gonzales NONVIOLENT, EMPOWERING ACTION
Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 01:17:29 -0500
From: announce at ctsastl.org
Good morning,
Alberto Gonzales will be speaking at Washington University on
Tuesday, February 19 in the evening. The venue is the Music Building
(formerly CASA, formerly Jewish synagogue) at 560 Trinity across
Delmar from the University City City Hall.
There will be a rally and several legal, permitted protests organized
by various Wash U student groups, Instead of War, and Amnesty, among
others. (More info at insteadofwar.org)
A smaller group, organized by CTSA and the Stop Torture Now project,
is planning a NONVIOLENT, EMPOWERING direct action. The action will
take place OUTSIDE. We are looking for others who are SERIOUS and
would like to explore the possiblity of taking part. We are going to
meet Tuesday, February 12 at 7PM at CTSA and again Saturday, February
February 16 from 10AM until noon at CTSA to plan and rehearse. We will
have a final rehearsal at some point on Tuesday, the day of, depending
on decisions made on Saturday.
We need people to fill these roles that are not direct actors:
videographers
still photographers
sound gatherers
projectionist
film editors and producers of short YouTube videos
singers for a YouTube audio track (SATB voices, one rehearsal and
recording session TBD)
legal observers and note takers
support for actors (holding bond money, driving, providing child
care)
We need people to fill these roles that are part of the direct
action:
guards (pantomime)
human dogs (pantomime)
Greek chorus (single spoken word or phrase)
perimeter guards (holding a barrier, possibly interacting with
police)
There are plenty of interesting roles, and we will discuss the
implications for each role. Many roles are open to those who are not
willing to risk arrest while others will require that the individual
be open to that possibility and be prepared. We will train actors in
nonviolent practices and discuss the practical preparations needed,
including bond money.
IF you can come Tuesday evening, great, see you at CTSA (1077 S.
Newstead) at 7. If you cannot come Tuesday but are interested, please
email Andrew Wimmer at wimmera at gmail.com indicating the roles you'd be
able to undertake. We may schedule another introductory converstion
before Saturday if there is enough interest. Call 314-723-4991 if you
have questions.
