Well, it will be tough to top last week, when the eyes of 70 million
people were on St. Louis for the VP debates, but there still is quite
a bit of great stuff going on this upcoming week. Before getting to
the calendar, I'd like to note a couple things. First, this is the
LAST WEEK to register to vote in Missouri. If you haven't registered
yet (or aren't sure), and don't mind being on the Obama email list, go
to http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.voteforchange.com right
away. Also, last week I mentioned that there's a call for artists for
an exhibit outside of the Hilton St. Louis Airport. But I forgot to
mention that the exhibit is in conjunction with Amnesty
International's Midwest Regional Conference Oct 24-26, which you're
all invited to! You can get all the details at
http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.amnestyusa.org%2FRegional_Conferences%2FMidwest%2Fpage.do%3Fid%3D1102924%26n1%3D5%26n2%3D48%26n3%3D787
.
This week's events:
Monday, Oct. 5. The Missouri Coalition for the Environment is
sponsoring what looks to be a pretty massive Candidate Forum on the
Environment from 7 to 9 PM at the CRC on 5020 Waterman Ave. All of
the local candidates, or at least all the ones cool enough to attend a
forum on the environment, are going to be there. Check out the
schedule at http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.moenviron.org%2Fcanforum.asp
.
Also Monday, Men Organized for Rape Education (MORE) at WashU is
sponsoring a forum called "Beyond Beats and Rhymes: Masculinity and
Hip Hop." The event is from 9 to 10 PM at Ursa's Fireside Cafe on
Shepley and you can get the details at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=27602877625 .
Tuesday, Oct 6. The Whitney Harris World Law Institute is hosting a
talk on "Contributions of the Inter-American System of Human Rights on
Transisitional Justice" by Juan Mendez from 3 to 4:30 at the newly
completed Seigle Hall (room 301) on the WashU campus. The full
details are at http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://law.wustl.edu%2Fhigls%2Findex.asp%3Fid%3D6776
.
Also, Tuesday, though it wasn't reported in the local media, when
Sarah Palin was speaking last Thursday, a group of CODEPINK St. Louis
women dropped a banner that said, "Women Want Peace Not War." You can
meet up with some of the groovy people from the local CODEPINK: Women
for Peace Chapter by going to their weekly bannering from 4:30 to 6 PM
on the I-44 pedestrian bridge in the Italian district (between Hampton
and Kingshighway: look for the signs).
Wednesday, Oct. 7. The renewed push to establish a sustainable
Independent Media center in St. Louis continues with a meeting at CAMP
on 3026 Cherokee. The meeting starts at 7:30 and you can get the full
details at http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://stlcamp.org%2Fevent2008%2Fimcconfluence_meeting
.
Thursday, Oct. 8. SIUE's United Students Against Sweatshops along
with other groups will be hosting a protest outside of Chipotle's on
(6310) Delmar from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Though they pride themselves
on getting food from ethical sources, Chipotle's has not yet pledged
to get their tomatoes from places that insure fair treatment of
farmworkers. You can find out more and RSVP at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=82962585645 .
Also Thursday, did I mention that today is the LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO
VOTE??? http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.voteforchange.com
Also Thursday, after Erin Davies' car was vandalized with homophobic
slurs, she decided to embrace her experience and use it to help
others. Check out her fascinating story and meet her in person as she
screens a documentary about the "fagbug," the VW Beetle she toured the
country in. The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 at AMC on the first floor
of Medaille Hall of Fontbonne University, and you can RSVP at
http://www.new.facebook.com/event.php?eid=27846668891
Friday, Oct. 9 Today is the last day to sign up for the bus from St.
Louis to the School of the Americas protest. Get the details at
http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.insteadofwar.org%2Fsite%2Fcalendar%2Fevents.php%3Fid%3DE4566
Also Friday, It's time again for the monthly Peace Economy Project
BBQ. The theme this month is "Tension and Militarization on the
Korean Peninsula" and you can get all the details at
http://www.new.facebook.com/event.php?eid=28723513049
Also Friday, from 12 PM to 1 PM, David Jay will be speaking about
asexuality and the growing number of people who never desire sex.
Check out http://www.new.facebook.com/event.php?eid=42428988672 to
RSVP and to get the location (which as of this message hadn't been
decided yet).
Saturday, Oct. 10 Moveon.org is recruiting people in St. Louis to get
out and start talking to voters this Saturday at 1 PM. Call
314-872-6939 (the Obama Mid-County Office) if you'd like to volunteer
this Saturday or any other times.
Also Saturday, a number of sweet groups are participating in "Get the
Folk UP!" a folk festival that's part of the Year of International
Human Rights at Webster University. The festival will be on the quad
from 1 to 8 PM and you can get the details at
http://www.new.facebook.com/event.php?eid=37442977175 .
Have a fun and meaningful week,
Adam
