Description
Students
from a variety of groups across town will be gathering to learn basic
strategies and skills for running effective campus campaigns.

There
are two primary goals for the training: (1) to provide an overview to
student groups on basic strategies for running effective campaigns on
campus and (2) to bring together students from across town with shared
progressive values, in order to make all of the student groups more
effective.

The basic format for the day is as follows: in the
morning and early afternoon, Jobs with Justice trainers led by Student
Worker Alliance Co-Chair Joe Thomas will do a training called "Core
Triangle" that goes over the basics of running an effective campaign.
In the afternoon, there will be breakout sessions on different skills
such as "Working with the media," "Coalition Building" "Art and
Activism," etc. Details for the breakout sessions will be added soon.
In the evening, there will be a party where people can relax and talk
more informally with each other. And finally, for groups who want it,
we will try to arrange for seasoned activists or campaigners to attend
the groups' next meeting to help plan using the framework provided at
the training. We'll also try to develop some way for groups who work on
similar issues (for example, the Amnesty International groups from
across town) to be able to stay in touch with each other.

The
cost will be about $5 per person, which is really low considering the
price of similar trainings. We're basically relying on the charity of
local community groups who are willing to invest in young people who
care about making the world better. Right now, we've got environmental,
peace, and social justice groups from UMSL, SLU, Webster and WashU who
will be participating.
