Subject: Power Past Coal: Invitation to 100 Days of Action
Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2009 11:03:43 -0500

Hello all,

Join dozens of groups across the United States for 100 Days of Action to
Push Past Coal! From Appalachia to Arizona, from the Dakotas to DC,
we're united to share the stories of communities impacted by coal, and
to begin working on truly clean and just energy future.

In short -- if you know anyone who is having any kind of event in the
next 115 days on coal issues or building new clean power in their
community -- we want to link all these together into a huge message
about the new power, creativity and massive-ness of the work being done
to Power Past Coal in the US -- so spread the word!
*
Invitation to Power Past Coal *(please share widely)

Please help us ratchet up the power of the movement to Power Past Coal
during the first 100 Days of a new Administration and a new Congress.
Starting January 21st, 2008, each day, for 100 Days, there will be an
action that exposes the true cost of coal and demands a shift to new
forms of power in the US.

We invite you to join us in a landmark effort bringing together
grassroots and national groups, working on issues from coal extraction,
to coal combustion waste to global warming. In November 2008, a number
of organizations working on coal and energy-related issues came together
and agreed to launch a new project– Power Past Coal: Expose the True
Cost of Coal, Plug into New Power.

How can you get involved? Are you planning an event that exposes the
true cost of coal or encourages communities to plug into new power?
Would you like to? If so, we invite you to add your action to the Power
Past Coal project. We also invite organizations working on coal and
energy issues in their community to sign onto and support this project.

If you are interested in helping America Power Past Coal or have more
questions about the project, please visit www.powerpastcoal.org
<http://www.pushpastcoal.org/> or contact Sierra Murdoch at
sierra at powerpastcoal.org <mailto:sierra at pushpastcoal.org>, coordinator
of the Power Past Coal project.

This project will connect, identify, and publicize more than 100
independent actions during the first 100 days of the Obama
administration and weave them together into a narrative about the
growing movement for a better energy future. We hope to raise the
profile of our individual campaigns while we educate citizens, business
leaders and politicians about the problems caused by coal, as well as
the solutions that will help us move beyond coal.

We want to expand the definition of "action" to include a variety of
activities, such as:

     * A nationwide call-in day on January 21st to the White House asking
the new administration to move aggressively to create the new
energy economy. (Visit http://theclean.org/callwh.html to learn more)
     * A rally at the Kentucky State Capital to call for an end to
dumping mountaintop removal waste into Kentucky streams
     * Citizens from New Mexico to New Jersey to North Dakota demanding
their legislators push for no new coal plants
     * Students in California, Washington, and Georgia demanding their
university no longer purchase power from coal.

Using an interactive website, we'll gather the photographs and stories
from these actions, share the stories of the communities being
devastated by the coal cycle, and as a nation we'll deliver them to
President Obama, demanding that he act immediately on an energy policy
that ends destructive forms of coal mining, blocks new coal fired power
plants and shifts beyond coal to cleaner, more just energy.

This is a decentralized project, coordinated by work teams of volunteers
from dozens of organizations from across the country. We invite your
organization to participate in the Power Past Coal project.

Participation does not imply endorsement of any other action listed as
part of this project.

Please help us ratchet up the power of this movement in the first 100
Days of a new Administration and a new Congress. If you are interested
in participating in the Power Past Coal project or have more questions
about the project, please visit www.powerpastcoal.org
<http://www.pushpastcoal.org/> or contact Sierra Murdoch at
sierra at powerpastcoal.org <mailto:sierra at pushpastcoal.org>, coordinator
of the Power Past Coal project.
