SUPPORT LOCAL CONTROL OF POLICE! LOBBY DAY FEBRUARY 11!We’re into the 2009 Missouri legislative session, and planning for another promising year in our push for Local Control of St. Louis police. Last year we got the bill out of committee for the first time in history, and believe we have a shot at success this time. Most of you know about the issue--St. Louis is one of only two cities in the U.S. which does not control its police. The result is an unresponsive and scandal-ridden police department. Just this year we have had a Towing Scandal which caused the resignation of the Chief, the revelation that at least $700,000 is missing, and an ongoing federal investigation. Then we found out the Department had a fund of $6,000,000 coming from asset forfeitures, a large proportion of which was not properly returned to the rightful owners or turned over to the public schools. Last but not least, two officers from an elite squad have been indicted for planting evidence and false reports. So, the atmosphere for success on the issue of Local Control has never been better. Help us move our campaign forward by joining us for a Lobby Day in Jefferson City on February 11. Last year our opposition filled the halls of the Capitol Building. This year we need to do the same!Specifics will be forthcoming. But we will be going to the Capitol around 7:30 a.m. and be back in St. Louis by around 5:00 p.m. We need a head count of who can attend, so please see if YOU can make it and let us know. Don’t be averse to bringing a friend along.Contact the Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression at 314-413-0454.
