Or did Linux grow because it was an open bazaar where everyone was
allowed to attempt to expand it in whatever direction they want, with
the best successes being included in the mainline (FSVO best), while
the FSF tried a directed "to be part of our team, you must agree to
work on this thing next" approach? (I am aware that recent
development hasn't been like that...)

If someone really wants to upgrade computers, you won't convince them
to patch your boat by whining about their upgrades.
Anyway, we have infinite hands, so we can do both - and much more!
