Generally I'd say every single Indymedia really must be running
mod_removeip (http://riseuplabs.org/privacy/apache/
http://packages.debian.org/en/lenny/libapache2-mod-removeip). At this
point all PHP or anything else knows is localhost.

However, lots of these services actually use a bit of javascript to
by-pass all of this, or embed images from their server. I guess without
the IP address all you will be getting is something like a baysian stat
analysis of the content.  That and your probably sending the content off
to a single point (via an encrypted connection?) real time in direct
relation to incoming connection.
