Big Debate?
An objection was put to South Coast imc about their first banner tested
out on
http://dev.indymedia.org.uk
which was agreed at one of their meetings.

Do check out whole debate from:

After some debate:

The caption was changed:

which has been on
http://dev.indymedia.org.uk
for ages.
I myself am sympathetic to a critic of that banner. But I think we have
to be careful with dealing with an embryonic kollektive, that it is up
to any us to who critic a part of their move to become part of imcuk to
guide them through any resolution of the issues, else it is very easy
for the emerging group dynamic to fall apart.
The truth is many of the existing imcers are very busy with just keeping
imcuk going to engage enough with emerging groups, in a guiding way. It
is very easy for them to be pushed off course and crushed, when they are
not yet linked into live web project.
If someone does want to block based on new banner then I suggest it
replaced with a banner that looks very temp, eg South Coast Indymedia in
times new roman. But keep site live so issue does not stall collective
building itself around new task and engagment on the issue between those
concerned takes place.
When a kollektive starts to grow around practically maintaining that sub
page then they will be in better shape to react and engage with concerns
and issues from the wider Indymedia and also their viewers and users.

Well truth if you took that approach it would end up in chicken and the
egg stalemate. The template only becomes operational when it is created
as a topic on live site, and this then means it is linked from the
kollektives box. Often a group is only spurred to develop a collective
understanding of itself when it has real task on a real live project to
get it's teeth into. Hence me being bold and making creating tick box
and page going live. I did give warning and no one blocked. But anyone
can still block? Are you or anyone else wishing to blocking? Does
anyone wish to formalise a new uk imc process? We could change topic
directory to like did with Bayer GM one and so pages not linked to, but
selections remain in db. That is an option.
But the thing is IMCUK have known imc south coast was coming since they
turned up at IMCUK irc meeting on March 20th 2004
http://archives.lists.indymedia.org/imc-uk-southcoast/2004-March/000072.html
and we would work with them to give them a sub page on imcuk, and imc
south coast have been waiting on 'us' for ages:

If we had not created a formal new imcuk process for them to go through
by now, or engaged with them to make requests of them before site went
live, then I think it need for site to go live to bring up any issues
and get them resolved.
I am open to ways forward as regards concerns but I have no regrets
about making site live now to get whole thing rolling with South Coast
Indymedia.
It is over to them to go for it.
cheers,
