i think this is an excellent solution. Althought understandably a lot 
of the photographers are upset that their images are not being 
displayed at the sizes they think they deserve,  even on fast broadband 
it can take forever for a large amount of images in a single post to be 
rendered. Having the page displayed as on the example above means you 
can get an overview for the story very quickly then make the decision 
to click and see all the pictures in all their glory.

I'd say this makes the site more usable to both the casual viewers and 
people who have more time on their hands.
