Hi - I think this is really good. I'd like to come down for it. I like the agenda - the only thing I'd like to add to the Aims list is a discussion oin how the different parts of the nwetork relate to each other - both online and off - structurally and politically.

in solidarity

Subject: [Imc-uk-network] Feb 08 Network gathering proposal

hi there,

as the gathering in wales didn't happen it seems to
make sense to move the proposed one in march forward a
bit.

also after contacting wietse from notts imc - as they
offered to host the next gathering too - it seems like
it might be easier to do it there.

i've migrated some of the information from the wales
gathering to a new page

http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/UkNetworkMeeting2008

please add issues that you thing should be discussed
there.

I've tried to create a bit of a framework which - of
course - is there to be ripped apart and rearranged.
there is one aspect which i really think is a good
idea that i would like to see kept. That is the idea
of having one day that is really accessible that are
relatively new to the indymedia network.

Location and Date of Network Meeting

Date: - tbc - Date - 9/10th or 16/17th of Feb

Location: - tbc - Nottingham or Manchester

Probable location for Nottingham - Sumac

Possible location for Manchester - Merci, The Yard
Theatre, Community Arts Northwest, Zion Centre

Aims

* Engage new people in the UK IMC Network
* Look at new ways of organising and empower network members to
create new iniciatives within the network
* Resolve difficulties over editorial decisions

Structure

It's proposed to have one day which makes sense and is
welcoming of people new to the network. Manchester IMC
for example is having a recruitment drive in January
and new people will be invited to the imc-uk-network
meeting.

The other day can be more detailed and while sessions
should be facilitated to allow input from people not
familiar with the network, it's a day when it's ok to
go into detail about existing issues.

Session based structure with facilitators

It get the most out of the gathering it's proposed
that days are broken up into 4 sessions and that each
session has a different animator.

The job of the animator is to

* facilitate the session or to find someone to do that
* try to make sure that people who are interested in
that subject get what they want to get out of that
session * make sure that most aspects are discussed by
timekeeping the session

This involves a bit of homework but hopefully not too
much. Most of it will be inviting comments on the
session and trying to work out a strategy for helping
discussion without guiding the direction of decisions.

If you are interested in something that isn't covered
by a a session here then please add it.

Session: Technical tutorials session 1
Animator: mick fuzz

Notes:

Mir Feature Creation: (?) Even if you are used to Mir,
the act of getting a feature together and uploading
all the images needed and getting the links right is a
bit tricky. This session will either refresh your
memory or give you the skill you need to get going.

Video / Audio Encoding: (Mick Fuzz) Finally there are
some applications that make video encoding easier and
some open source documentation to go with it.

Equipment needed: projectors x 2 (more if possible)

Session: Editorial Decisions
Animator: ?

Notes:

If you look at the archives of the imc-uk-features
list there has been a lot of discussion about wether a
specific article should be hidden or published. This
debate has been very divisive. This network meeting
seems like the best place to look at the editorial
guidelines of the UK and discuss them in relation to
this article and potential future issues.

Gilad Atzmon article, a suggested approach to the
debate:

  1. Is he racist?
          * If so ban him,
          * If not then 2
  2. Is an article he has written racist?
          * If so then hide it
          * If not then don't hide it.

It may also be worth talking about the style of
discussion of imc-uk-features and trying to come up
with ideas to make the process less adversarial ...

Printed Materials

It would be great to get a simple printable poster and
flyer for the event when the dates have been decided.
Can anyone take this on?

Most people in the network are on the imc-uk-features
or imc-uk-network list, but not all. So it would be
good to have people promote and remind people about
the gathering and how it impacts on the specialist
groups. If you feel you can do this please pu
