To the People of Indymedia
A recent report from NASA said that the Earth's temperature and the melting ice caps and the rising sea levels were all happening three times faster than they were when last monitored, which has led to some scientists claiming that runaway global warming is now occuring and is possibly irreversible.
This suggests that the Russian scientists' findings of a 30% slowdown in the Gulf Stream and a likely complete stoppage around 2012 is quite likely to be correct, and that the next report will probably show the Gulf Stream has slowed down even more than before.
In any event global warming and climate change are causing devastation all over the Earth, and the children of the eco warriors kids' bloc will probably decide to lead the march at the Camp for Climate Action near Heathrow Airport in August with their famous banner "The Kids Are Revolting!"
The Childrens' Revolution was started by Angel and Sunshine at the Stirling G8 protest camp in 2005 and was supported by Peace not War, the Creative Forum, People and Planet, the Rhythms of Resistance, the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army, Revolutionation, and Rinky Dink.
All the television channels promised to fly in helicopter crews to film the childrens' blockade of the Gleneagles summit, but they were recalled to London as soon as the bombs went off.
Indymedia UK were too busy to take any notice of the kids' campaign to try to ensure the survival of future generations, and instead of arguing about the details of global warming isn't it time Indymedia took a real interest in what the grassroots environmental activists are actually doing?
Angel (07862100817) and Magic Dave (07986465552) can talk to you about it before we go mainstream if you like.
Whatdoesitmean.com reported on 21 January 2007:
“Russian Scientists have become alarmed this past week after an unprecedented massive ‘Superstorm’ hit the entire Northern Hemisphere of our planet causing widespread destruction and death.
“From record windstorms assaulting Northern Europe and the British Isles; to the destruction of California’s citrus crops; to the devastating snow and ice storms still assaulting the North American continent from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Maritime Provinces; at no time in recorded history, according to Russian Scientific Reports, has our World experienced such catastrophic weather on such a global scale over such a short period of time...
“Supporting Doctor Scientist Abdusamatov’s research was the virtually unreported in the West stoppage of the Gulf Stream waters of the Atlantic Ocean on December 11th, and which lasted for 8 days ending on December 19th, and which saw this massive ocean current turn ‘suddenly’ to the South from its normal pattern towards Northern European waters.
“These reports further detail that should the Gulf Stream waters cease flowing to Europe altogether a catastrophic situation would overtake the Continent causing massive crop failures and the mass migrations of Europeans to the Southern Nations of the European Union.”
The BBC science and nature website on 13 november 2003 reported:
“The Big Chill - programme summary.
“Remember that long, hot summer? You might never see its like again. And all that talk of global warming? Forget it.
'It's clearly going to influence every single one of us every day of our lives'- Professor Bill McGuire, University College London.
“This season's first Horizon reveals that a growing number of experts fear Britain could be heading for a climate like Alaska. Our ports could be frozen over. Ice storms could ravage the country, and London could see snow lying for weeks on end. It would be the biggest change in the British way of life since the last Ice Age.
“The first signs that such a disaster could happen came from deep within the ice sheet of Greenland. Scientists discovered that the Earth's past was littered with sudden, drastic drops in temperature.
“The big question was: could it ever happen again? Clues came from tiny shells at the bottom of the Atlantic; a huge glacier on the move in Arctic and some alarming discoveries in the far north of Russia.
“In the end there came the terrifying revelation: the Gulf Stream, that vast current of water that keeps us warm, could be cut off.
“According to one scientist, there is a one in two chance it will happen in the next century.
“Others say a climatic catastrophe could be heading our way in just twenty years time.”
“Warming could bring colder UK winters” reported BBC news on 13 November 2003.
“By Penny Palmer. BBC Horizon.
“Britain could be heading for a 'big freeze' if global warming switches off an important ocean current in the Atlantic, some scientists say.
“We could be heading for much colder winters.
“Britain is kept relatively mild in the winter by the warm air blanket brought to us from the tropics by a branch of the Gulf Stream.
“But if global warming continues to melt major ice sheets, that supply of warm air could come to an abrupt end, according to a number of experts.
“The Gulf Stream relies on a sensitive 'conveyer belt' action, which could be 'switched off' - quite suddenly - if it becomes diluted by fresh water from the melting ice-sheets, they claim.
“Dr Terry Joyce, an oceanographer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, US, believes there is a 50% chance of a sudden climate change happening in the next 100 years. 'It will be quick,' he says. 'Suddenly one decade we're warm, and the next decade we're in the coldest winter we've experienced in the last 100 years, but we're in it for a 100 years.'
“The possibility of much harsher winters in the UK is reported in the Horizon programme on BBC Two.”
“Gulf Stream Slowed by 30% Since 1957” was the heading on an Indymedia story on 29 May 2007 by Mike Rhodes from the NYCity IMC (25 May).
“Failing ocean current raises fears of mini ice age.
“The ocean current that gives western Europe its relatively balmy climate is stuttering, raising fears that it might fail entirely and plunge the continent into a mini ice age.
“The dramatic finding comes from a study of ocean circulation in the North Atlantic, which found a 30% reduction in the warm currents that carry water north from the Gulf Stream.
“The slow-down, which has long been predicted as a possible consequence of global warming, will give renewed urgency to intergovernmental talks in Montreal, Canada, this week on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.”
“Gulf Stream shutting down, BBC ignores?” wrote q in Portland, Oregon, USA on Indymedia UK on 11 May 2007.
“A recent Cambridge University study has found evidence that a glacier ice-formation mechanism that brings the Gulf Stream north, keeping Europe warm, is ALREADY LOSING STRENGTH. CNN in the US is reporting this (sort of), but the BBC website has barely mentioned it.
“Changes in Gulf Stream could chill Europe.
“New data on global warming; thinning polar ice cap
“By Marsha Walton CNN. Scientists now have evidence that changes are occurring in the Gulf Stream, the warm and powerful ocean current that tempers the western European climate.
“Without the influence of the Gulf Stream and its two northern branches, the North Atlantic Drift and the Canary Current, the weather in Britain could be more like that of Siberia, which shares the same latitude.”

Looking at just one of your sources, the Hadley Centre, it states:
"When we use the Hadley Centre climate model to look at the response of the N Atlantic ocean circulation to future man-made emissions, shown in the above image, we see that reductions of about 20% by 2100 are predicted, rather than a complete shutdown. Other good climate models see
greater or lesser reductions, but none produces a shutdown over the next 100 years.
The Hadley Centre model has also been used to investigate the impact on climate of a hypothetical shut-down of the THC. It predicts that the whole of the northern hemisphere would be cooled, especially the north Atlantic; the UK might see a cooling of 3–5 °C. Daily minimum temperatures in
central England in winter could plunge by 10 or 20 °C, and this would likely have a bigger effect on UK society than global warming. However, as was pointed out above, this is a 'what-if' scenario and not a prediction."

The Met Hadley Centre confirmed this about six months later as reported on the BBC Horizon programme. Trillions of gallons of fresh water are pouring into the Atlantic off the coast of Greenland every day, reducing the salinity of the Gulf Stream slowing it down, so this process is irreversible. This is not a cycle but is the direct result of global warming melting the Greenland ice shelf which is rapidly sliding into the ocean as water from the surface sinks down and lubricates the base. This has not been reported as hot news in any mainstream papers yet, but it is is a time bomb waiting to go off and Indymedia would be a good place to start. The "eco warriors" are planning massive opposition to the Olympics along with local residents in Hackney and Stratford. However the priority right now is to defend Sipson village which has been earmarked for demolition for the third runway at Heathrow. The entire Environmental Movement worldwide is gearing up for what could be the
biggest eco protest campaign in history, starting with the Camp for Climate Action from 14 to 21 August near Heathrow Airport, and carrying on with an Earth Fair Consumer Revolt and a permanent camp for peace and the environment. These ideas have been seriously discussed for ten years and the planning is now in progress. That is the relationship between the story about the present flooding and the Movement. There are extreme weather events happening all over the world right now. Worldwide drought especially in Australia, America and Brazil. The rainforest is dying and will never recover. Island nations are disappearing, Bangladesh is flooding, the Inuit eskimos' homeland is melting, and Climate Indymedia says the worst predictions about global warming will come true within five years, and not in 100 years. Dr James Hansen of NASA says the Earth is in "imminent peril". A secret report from the Pentagon in 2004 leaked to the Observer newspaper warned the White House that
worldwide flooding would start in 2007 and global warming posed a massive security risk to the United States. The human race faces extinction this century according to Professor Peter Barret, Director of the Antarctic Research Centre in New Zealand. In my opinion Indymedia should be taking global warming and climate change far more seriously than it has so far. There is no debate necessary any more, it is time for direct action again. (You can quote me on every word of this, but bear in mind that the agreed spokespeople for the children of the eco warriors are Magic Dave and Angel who can be contacted directly at any time. The worldwide media campaign is about to begin and it should logically start with Indymedia UK.) Ignorance is not bliss, goodbye cruel world, Jubal Harshaw

Whew! I have nothing against the feature in principle but lets not get carried away. Check your timescales. Where is the evidence that the Gulf Stream will stop a mere 5 years from now and will cause minus 40 degrees? How long has it been going and it is probably cyclical anyway? So we had
> similar floods just 50 years ago? So what? 'Since records began' is slightly more convincing but still by no means conclusive when considered on a realistic timescale. The last GLOBAL ice age was about 10,000 years ago, attributable to Milankovitch Cycles, and the next one could occur as much as 50,000 years from now. The reality is that extreme events considered in the UK alone are a poor indicator of GLOBAL warming. All you can say is that any freak weather here is likely to become more frequent and this is what it is going to be like when it happens, only worse. So, cut out the timescales bit and everything should be fine. Doug.

Hi everybody,
In my opinion the story is factual and possibly shows a turning point in the way the mainstream media is dealing with climate change. Britain is about to suffer severe consequences of global warming like heatwaves with temperatures as high as 40 degrees, and the Gulf Stream will stop about 2012 bringing a new ice age with minus 40 degrees. If you want the movement related angle Channel Four is desperate for a behind the scenes exclusive on the Camp for Climate Action and the groups that will be there and what they stand for, and this is likely to be agreed for broadcast about a week or two after the Live Earth concerts. The Climate Camp networking group have been asked to provide someone to be interviewed on behalf of the Camp itself, and Rising Tide, Earth First, Plane Stupid, the Campaign Against Climate Change etc will be invited to take part as well. Magic Dave will probably be speaking on behalf of Peace not War and the Creative Forum and Angel and Sunshine
will represent the Childrens' Revolution group. You can talk to Magic Dave directly on 07986465552 and Angel on 07862100817 any time if you want quotes and you can quote me as well if you like. There will be a series of stories related to the Climate Camp going worldwide soon and they will all start on Indymedia UK if you want them to. (I am acting on behalf of a small tribe of independent eco warriors and their friends.) Cheers, Jubal Harshaw,

Hiya,
I'd like to propose this feature about the recent floods and climate change to the UK, Notts and Sheffield site as well as the climate chaos topic. https://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/NottsFeaturePage2
Cheers, Wietse
hi everybody. a quick response as its late but i have serious objections against this feature: not the climate change is not an important issue, but i cannot see any movement related issues the the feature as it is. the feature is almost only referring to very suspicious sources as tabloid press, stupid politicians, and lots of links to mainstream media as the star and bbc. Even the tabloids are linking the storms to climate change. The Mirror reported that "Flood damage is becoming more common
because of global warming" while warning that insurance companies will increasingly refuse to insure homes built on flood plains. well, some tabloiad reported that "the sun will explode soon" or that the end of the world is near (thats a tabloid issue once a year at least). if you want to convince people that climate change is a serious issue, better dont quote such sources (former) Prime Minister, Tony Blair said that he thought the floods were related to such major global issues in his joint press conference with Arnold Schwarzenegger. While the met office warns of further storms to come during the next week, uuh, i wouldnt believe blair or schwarzenegger even if they say the earth is ball-shaped. Sir David King warned that in the long-term, as Greenland ice disappeared, rising sea levels would wipe out Britain's coastal town and cities. "The message that climate change is the biggest change our civilisation has ever had to face up to is getting out there. sorry again,
it might be somehow true, but britain will probably one of the last countries in the world suffering under climate change, before that happens, millions of poeple will be dead in asia and other countries of the global south. there might be some truth in what he says, but well startx. Indymedia
