The following proposed feat is now at the wiki address
above (including some hyperlinks, more could do with being
added), I no doubt needs some typos fixing and because we
have been a bit slow with this it now won't be able to go
up till tomorrow am due to the 24 hour rule, but once it's
up it can be updated as reports of the demo come in:
Four Decades of Occupation - ENOUGH!
This week saw the 40th Anniversary of the Six Day War,
and the ensuing military occupation of 22% of the
Palestinian homeland. The other 78% had been seized by
the Israeli forces in the colonial "War of Idependence",
when three quarters of a million Palestinans were
ethnically cleansed. Since 1967 the 22% has been eroded
through a system of illegal settlements, settler only
roads and 'Apartheid Wall'. This has served the purpose
of destroying contiguity of Palestinian land, and of
dividing the West Bank into at least three distinct
cantons. Vast amounts of agicultural land and crops have
been taken or destroyed, increasing the dependance on
aid, and destroying communities and livelihoods in the
process. Israel showed that settlements can be
dismantled in 2005 when it removed the settlers and
military prison. Since then Gaza has become a virtual
prison, its borders, sea and airspace controlled by the
Israelis, and the Rafah crossing, Gaza's gateway to the
world has been closed for most of this year.
Europe and the United States have continually refused to
act for the rights of Palestinians, regardless of the
brutal behaviour of the occupying Israeli army. In fact
they have demonstrated their partiality by subsidising
the Israeli state to the tunes of billions of dollars per
year, and arming them to the hilt. Israels nuclear
arsenal has been public knowledge for decades and has
been studiously ignored. When Palestinians tired of the
outrageous corruption practised by Fatah politicians in
the Palestian Authority, their decision to use their vote
to elect Hamas was rewarded by impopsotion of economic
sanctions by Western Powers.
An international call out has been made for direct
actions to protest against the ongoing colonisation of
Palestine as the Occupation enters it 41st year.G8
protestors responded with a mass demo at a caterpillar
plant. An unconfirmed report claims that the plant was
firebombed that night and that Caterpillar machinery was
destroyed.
In Britain, boycott camapigns have increased and votes by
the NUJ and UCU for action against the Israeli state. On
Saturday 9th June a demo has been called by the 'ENOUGH'
Capaign, a coalition of NGOs, unions and activists to
fight for an end to occupation, and peace based on on
justice, equality and freedom.
The march will leave from Lincoln's Inn Fields at 1.30pm
and end in Trafalger Square.
