[Imc-uk-features] quick notes from the IRC Dispatch meeting on 6.9.2007

It was quite a long meeting and many things were discussed, but I don't
really have time for proper minutes. So here are the main points in brief.

1. Assessment of Indymedia Disatch at Climate Camp
------------------------------------------------------------------

- Preparation could have been much better (maps, advertising the numbers,
getting useful contacts in advance etc.).

- Coordination wasn't very good. It wasn't clear sometimes who was doing
what so some things were duplicated while others left undone for long.
Some people were not using the designated IRC channels properly or
coordinating with others, which affected both the quality and speed of
info.

--> It had already been agreed that the dispatch channel (closed) is used
for processing and confirming info, while another open one(s) (dsei,
noborders etc) for confirmed info only, then things are copied to the
Ticker. #uk can be used for chit-chat.

- Dispatch should always be in a separate tent to the public access one.

- Would be good to prepare features (skeleton, background info, features
plan etc.) in advance.

- We should find better ways of highlighting the Ticker than copy-pasting
the whole thing into feature abstracts.

2. tech stuff
------------------

We'll send a separate email about this soon but the main points were:
Ticker archiving and its relation to startpage and topics.
A new proposal to have a creeping ticker on startpage that shows the last
Ticker entry or something (see chrisc's proposal).
It was thought that a character limit on Ticker entries is a bad idea, but
people should try and make them as short and concise as possible.

3. DSEi
-------------

Basically we don't seem to have the capability to do proper dispatch as
usual or run a media centre, so we're gonna do it amongst ourselves, so to
speak, without using public dispatch phone numbers. Shifts and roles were
agreed on. Contacts are being arranged.

--> If any one is going to be out and about, email me OFFLIST.

4. No Border Camp
------------------------------

We'll send you a separate email about this. We seem to be pretty much
sorted re field media centre and stuff.

P.S. Process-related discussions should happen on the process list;
content features etc on the features list.
