Hia,
I propose to change the headline/title of the current dsei feature into
something that actually relates to the article!!!
Scare headlines might make sense in London, but we up here in Scotland just
don't get the joke, and are pretty alarmed by it, especially as the protests
don't seem to be over yet.
Example:
It reminds me of a feature written by someone at home at the computer desk
whilst I was out protesting with three others and we were nearly run over by
some hundreds of aggressive policemen with dogs and horses and wondered what
the hell was going on.... somebody had written some VERY misleading stuff in
a feature on Indy Scotland that people should breaking through the police
barriers etc and in turn for the protesters actually present locally it was
getting very though!
I just wondered if the person who has been writing this headline on DSEI has
thought of that!!!
You just CAN NOT suggest protesters would turn violent on
Indymedia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Because:
a) we are seen as the protesters voice - if we write something like that it
actually IS BELIEVED much more by many more journalists and authorities and
protesters as if we don't!!!!!
b) YOU NEED TO PUT AT LEAST AN EXPLANATION IN THE ARTICLE!!!!
c) what we do has consequenses; it might not hit you, but it WILL have even
more BAD EFFECTS on the people out protesting.
d) IT CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR ACTUAL TIMELINE REPORTING!!!!!
e) Sensational headlines are the tools of mainstream media to sell more
copies, we should abstain from it, especially as ONLY the headline is relayed
on global indymedia!!!!!
f) Indymedia people are usually experienced enough in protests to be able to
understand the concept of "violence against human beings" and property
destruction.
Messing this up is even more alarming than usual!!!
And it harms our reputation that we want to do truthfull reporting!
Actually I wanted to go on irc to discuss that topic more politely, but
something doesn't work with it on my end.
I would propose changing title into something that actually takes place, like
"Protests against arms fair start today" or so.
bye for now
Ulla
