1. I have created an alternative pre-publish page which I think is
clearer than the current up
see http://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/static/prepublish2.html
and please comment etc. I propose this page replaces the current
pre-publish page and
will action this it two weeks time after consideration and suggestions
on the lists.
also, the publish page itself needs a little tweaking, the text only
version still mentions
uploads when there is no needs. I propose we remove the following
line...
"Uploads of large files such as video or audio might time out. Try the
non-encrypted publish page which also MS Internet Explorer users on
Macs may need. If you are unable to use this form an alternative is to
send your file to imc-uk-reports [at] lists [dot] indymedia [dot] org
for us to upload it. Please include in the email under which name and
title your posting should appear. Also see help page."
2. the new cleaner publish page is great... and the changes allow for
regional difference to
the publish page. This means we could also have different publish pages
that are tailored
to specific types of media uploads eg. video or audio . This would
enable the page to offer
focused guidance to ensure the user contributes better meta data to
accompany the uploads.
Again, I propose a two week discussion and then I am prepared to work
on these special
publish pages.
3. Finally, could we tweak the topics now? this has been discussed
several times in the past
and there have been various proposals for rationalised topics. It would
be great if we could
actually move forward on this.
While people consider the options I propose a few interim improvements
and again suggest
a two week period for discussing them before they are implemented on
not. These changes
only require changes to the publish page rather than the database ie.
they do not address
previous proposals or reducing the number of topics by merging some.
My proposal is simple to rename the following...
'Animal Liberation' to 'Animal Rights' [controversial term but
liberation is to narrow, ie. doesn't include welfare type campaigns for
better treatment']
'Anti-militarism' to 'War & Terror' (or perhaps 'Peace & Conflict')
'Anti-racism' to 'Race & religion'
'Ecology' to 'Environment'
'Indymedia' to 'Alt Media'
'Technology' to 'Science & Tech'
I've kept all the terms short because they have to fit in the left hand
column but they could be fleshed out a little in the publish page to
provide a clearer idea of what they encompass.
In the future I'd suggest merging some of the topics. For example
'repression and social struggles' , 'Migration and racism' and also
'health and ecology' since in all these cases there is a hell of a lot
of overlap.
I'd also ask people to consider how 'zapatista' and 'analysis' fit into
the these topic. In my opinion 'zapatista' is out of place. It is very
specific, more like a campaign or action than a topic. Meanwhile
analysis is very broad. It is basically a lone example of an article
category rather than a topic - perhaps there should be an additional
topic type to go with it, eg. 'report' (and perhaps 'announcement').
Then all articles could be defined as either on or the other.
