Hello everyone,

We are sad and disappointed to have to come to you with another conflict
of local Indymedias. We have hoped until this point to avoid having to
take this step, and take up more volunteer time and energy, too much has
already been wasted.

We have previously informed the global network about the impending fork
of Indymedia UK [1]. The agreement to fork is a result of ongoing and
irresolvable conflicts within Indymedia UK. There are different visions
for the project that are not compatible.

We are writing as Group B, or Be The Media, which includes individual
Indymedia UK volunteers and regions as well as established Indymedias
Bristol, London, Northern England and Nottingham. The other group, group
A or Mayday collective, includes some Indymedia UK volunteers and some
UK regions Sheffield and Birmingham. Other regions are archiving their
sites, as they are no longer supported by a collective (Manchester,
Liverpool, potentially Cambridge) and Oxford is preparing to set up an
independent site and go through New Imc.

In December 2010 at the last network meeting, everyone present,
including group A and B, agreed to archive Indymedia UK and fork into
two distinct projects [2]. Following this agreement, neither of the
factions can at this point claim any ownership of Indymedia UK.

Indymedia UK as a site is a joint project of all Indymedia's in the UK
and does not 'belong to the mayday collective as they keep insinuating.

Group A, the Mayday collective has tried to go through New Imc and have
been blocked by a member of the New Imc working group. Their issues with
New Imc have nothing to do with group B or any Indymedia in the UK. We
have not interfered with their application.

Group A has now retroactively blocked the decision made to fork, made 5
months ago at the last UK network meeting.   [insert minutes statement]
Without proposing an alternative solution, they try to lay claim to
Indymedia UK - to stop the fork, and retain the UK site for themselves.

Group A has several independent domains, and has told us they have all
the technical resources they need to set up. The only reason that they
have put forward for stopping the fork, is that they do not have an
indymedia.org domain.

Following the agreement, we, Group B, decided to set up our site at an
independent domain, bethemedia.org.uk, and focus on working on the
project, because this site intends to be a collection of all the radical
media across the UK.

Group A is in control of the DNS (domain registration) for
indymedia.org.uk, a crucial piece of infrastructure for the Indymedia UK
site. During the past week, relations have continued to deteriorate, to
a point where we have the following worry:


We fear that Group A, the Mayday collective, will abuse the tech power
and privilege that they have been entrusted with by all of us, and
hijack Indymedia UK domain.

We sincerely hope that on 1st May, after a successful fork, we will look
back at this email and find it alarmist and feel a bit stupid.

However, should the unthinkable happen, and tech privilege be abused,
and a whole subsection of Indymedia stolen, we do hope for the support
of the global community.

Hola a todxs,

Sentimos tener que escribiros sobre otro conflicto de un nodo local de
Indymedia.  El hecho de vernos obligados a hacerlo también nos
decepciona. Hasta este momento hemos tenido la esperanza de que
podriamos evitar tener que dar este paso, y no tener que  absorver mas
tiempo y energía de los voluntarixs, ya se ha gastado demasiado.

Ya habiamos informado con anterioridad a la red global sobre la
inminente bifurcación de Indymedia UK [1]. El acuerdo de bifurcar el
proyecto es el resultado de la continuacion de los conflictos
irresolubles en el seno de Indymedia UK. Existen visiones diferentes
acerca el proyecto que son incompatibles.

Os escribimos como grupo B, o Be The Media, el cual incluye a algunos
voluntarixs de  Indymedia UK y algunos proyectos regionales, así como
las Indymedias establecidas en Bristol, London, Northern England y
Nottingham. El otro grupo, gupo A o colectivo Mayday, incluye a algunos
voluntarixs de Indymedia UK y algunos proyectos regionales como
Sheffield y Birmingham. Otros proyectos regionales ya han archivado sus
sitios o estan en el proceso de hacerlo al carecer de colectivos en
activo (Manchester, Liverpool, y potencialmente Cambridge también) y
Oxford esta preparandose para establecer un sitio independiente
y seguir el proceso de New Imc.

En la última reunión de la red de Indymedia UK en 2010, todxs lxs
presentes, incluyéndo los del grupo A y B, acordaron archivar Indymedia
UK y bifurcarse en dos proyectos distintos [2]. A raíz de este acuerdo
ninguna de las dos facciones puede, en este momento, reclamar propieded
de Indymedia UK.

El sitio web de Indymedia UK es un proyecto conjunto de todos los nodos
de Indymedia en el Reino Unido (UK) y no pertence, de ninguna manera, al
colectivo Mayday por mucho que se empeñen a insinuarlo.

El Grupo A (el colectivo Mayday) ha intentado seguir el prceso de New
Imc pero su solicitud ha sido bloqueada por un miembro del gupo de
trabajo de New Imc. Ni el Grupo B ni ningun otro nodo de Indymedia en el
Reino Unido tienen nada que ver con los problemas que el Grupo A tiene
con New Imc. Queremos dejar claro que nosotrxs no hemos interferido en
su solicitud.

Ahora, y con carácter retroactivo, el Grupo A esta intentado bloquear la
decisión de bifurcarse; un acuerdo que se tomó hace 5 meses en la última
reunión de la red de Indymedia en el Reino Unido. Sin proponer ninguna
solución alternativa, estan intentando reclamar la 'propiedad' de
Indymedia UK - paralizar la bifurcación, y quedarse con el sitio de
Indymedia UK para ellxs mismxs.

El Grupo A posee varios dominios independientes, y nos han dicho que
tienen todos los recursos técnicos necesarios para establecerse. La
única razón que han presentado para suspender la bifurcación es que no
tienen un dominio indymedia.org.

Tras el acuerdo tomado por todas las partes, nosotros, el Grupo B, hemos
decidido establecer nuestro sitio web en un dominio independiente,
bethemedia.org.uk, y concentrarnos a trabajar en el proyecto, dado a que
este sito web tiene la intención de ser una colección de varios
proyectos de medios radicales en el Reino Unido.

El Grupo A tiene el control del DNS (el registro del dominio) de
indymedia.org.uk, una pieza crucial de la infraestructura del sitio
Indymedia UK. Durante la última semana las relaciones entre los dos
grupos han seguido deteriorándose, hasta el punto que ahora tenemos la
siguiente preocupación:

Nos preocupa que el Grupo A, el colectivo Mayday, abusará de su poder
sobre los aspectos técnicos y del privilegio con el que se les confió
por todxs nosotrxs, y que van a sequestrear del dominio de Indymedia UK
apropiandoselo.

Sinceramente tenemos la esperanza de que en el 1 de Mayo, y después de
una bifurcación exitosa, podamos mirar hacia atrás y, sintiéndonos un
poco estúpidos, encontrar este correo alarmista.

Sin embargo, si pasara lo inconcebible, y el privilegio sobre los
aspectos técnicos que tiene el colectivo Mayday fuera abusado resultando
en el robo de una subsección entera de Indymedia, esperamos poder contar
con el  apoyo de la comunidad global de Indymedia
