elijah from riseup just told me that they have a donation of
100mhz ecc 1 gb sticks that might fit those lp1000r so i held
back ordering the RAM until it's clear if 100mhz fit in those
boxes (the specs say they can only take 133mhz but let's see).
if that works it'd be great - it'd maxx out the box for nought.
buying (redundant) sticks like that would be 800+, in pounds...

anyway i've ordered that gigabit USR997902 card as the debian
kernel list marks it compatible with vanilla 2.6.13-rc1:
