It's because it's a favicon rather than a png I guess...
so no anti-alisaing, 256 colours, 16x16px etc, more info:

Mozilla / Firefox support png's for this but I don't
think IE does...

Hmm, personally I don't like it so much... I have added it
to the collection of IMC favicons here though:
