[Imc-uk-useability] calendar: a few thoughts

hi,
I'm Clara from Amsterdam, and I've joint this list because in Indy.nl we
are also discussing some options about a calendar system - or have been
on and off for the last year. So I hope I can get some input for our
site, and maybe our ideas make sense as well for you.
We started making a list of upcoming events manually, but that seems to
be a lot of stupid work, and also people complained because they found
it to much of an amateur approach of doing it (that's not necessarily my
idea...)
In NL we have two or three online calendars where people can post their
stuff directly, and as editorial collective most of us don't really want
to take over the task of maintaining a national activist calendar as
well. However, the indymedia site seems to be much more accessible then
the other sites so that a lot of events are posted on indymedia instead.
So we would need a way of interacting with existing calendar systems.
We thought about taking of all announcement out of the newswire if the
box 'calendar' is ticked dispaly all of them on a special page (like a
topic page). Using one of the unneeded fields for a start-date might
make it possible to put them into a chronological order.
Unfortunately, people often post their announcements for events with
rather long texts so the line between an announcement with additional
information and an article with an announcement can sometimes be a bit
blurry.
So it would be good to have an option in a calendar for several links,
like for the organizer, but also for links to indymedia postings
announcing it inmore detail. Maybe even the possibility to add links
with reports and pictures from the events afterwards? I don't know about
the UK, but I always think it's a shame if Indymedia is only used to
announce an event, and I would be happy to find a way to encourage
people more to give some report or some feedback on events, even on
events like film screenings or benefit parties and not only when the
police made trouble.
so much as first ideas from me,
love and solidarity
