Hi!

this is dongwon from seoul, s.korea.
i'm doing my activities in Media Culture Actions against neo-liberal
globalization and FTA in particular recently(http://gomediaction.net/).
i'm also working as a volunteer of the programming for screening events
at the Public Conference on the issue of Copyright in the Korea-US FTA
negotiation on 25th of May as you can see below. it's all volunteer
works and free screening without charge.

Short videos i'd like to program in this screening are all that IP
justice and copyright issues(criticism as well as propoganda like MS's
selection at
mms://msnukwm.fplive.net/msnuk/thoughtthieves/pitfalls_250kbps.wmv).
Video work relating copyright to FTA would be even better, though.
i searched out at www.thought-thieves.org
<http://www.thought-thieves.org/>and found out some appropriate videos
for our screening events.
(i noted my considerations at
http://gomediaction.net/wiki/index.php/Screening_in_200605_IP_justice_conference)
<http://gomediaction.net/wiki/index.php/Screening_in_200605_IP_justice_conference>

our plan is to translate into korean for subtitles and screening at the
venue as well as in some websites such as http://gomediaction.net/ and
http://www.freeuse.or.kr
so if you have the script, that's wonderful. In case of short video less
than 10(15?) mins or so, i think you might want to send the original dv
file not via mail, but via our ftp server.

if you are interested in letting us show your works OR if you'd like to
strongly recommend someone's works other than thought-thieves
<http://www.thought-thieves.org/>, please let me know it very soon(it's
on 25th).

thank you,
best, dongwon

p.s.: i'm also looking for (anti-)neoliberal globalization films and FTA
- related films in particular.

Public Conference on the issue of Copyright in the Korea-US FTA negotiation

- Date : May 25th, 2006

- Venue : Mediact, Kwanghwamun

- Organized by: the Coalition of Korean Peoples against Korea-US FTA on
Intellectual Property(http://nofta-ip.jinbo.net)

- Background

In February, 2006, Korea and US government officially announced that
they would start to negotiate Korea-US FTA. Copyright issues will be one
of the most controversial agendas in the FTA negotiation. Considering
the FTA that the United States negotiated with Singapore, Australia, and
Chile, and what the United States has been demanding from the Korean
government thus far, it is assumed that the United States will request
copyright protection similar to or stronger than the United States
copyright laws such as the 1998 DMCA(Digital Millennium Copyright Act).
However, the DMCA and extending the copyright protection period in the
Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) have been under much
criticism because it obstructs fair use, science research, technology
advancement, and publishing. Furthermore, there are strong concerns
about how it impedes computer security research. Nonetheless, United
States has been imposing their own copyright laws on other countries by
adopting laws similar to the DMCA in the FTA.

In this conference, CKP will invite governmental official, professor,
lawyer and social activist who have been closely involved in the
copyright issues and discuss the controversial issues and problems on
the copyright in the Korea-US FTA.

Brief Introduction of the Coalition of Korean Peoples against Korea-US
FTA on Intellectual Property

The Coalition of Korean Peoples against Korea-US FTA on Intellectual
Property(CKP) was officially launched on April 11th, 2006. We(CKP) are
deeply worried about the Korea-US FTA negotiations especially on the
issues of Intellectual Property Rights(IPR) such as copyright, patent
and trademark and we strongly oppose the Korea-US FTA.
Considering the FTA that the US negotiated with other countries such as
Australia and Singapore, and what the US has been demanding from the
Korean government thus far, we assume that US will request IPR
protection similar to or stronger that the US IPR laws. And US has also
requested many policies to threaten the rights for people to their
health and culture from Korean government.
We think it will bring about dangerous situations, for example, to
destroy Korean people’s public health and to obstruct fair use, science
research, technology advancement and publishing.

In this coalition, five civic and socail organizations(Citizens’ Action
Network, Cultural Action, Intellectual Property Left 'IPLeft', Korean
Progressive Network Jinbonet, Public Pharmaceutical Center) have joined.
