=== Discussion / Strategy based Workshops ===
==== Video on the Net Strategy - Future
possibilities====
Mainstream Media is facing a crisis. New technologies
and projects are converging to democratise access to
video distribution on a global level, challenge the
dominance of top-down broadcast media and give voice
to range of critical social and environmental issues.
This "shattering/transformation" of the mainstream
will mean small (or big) changes in the way media is
produced/distributed.
Can alternative media make the most of this in the
long and short term. What are our best strategies for
increasing our visibility?
* start time: FRI 17.30
* end time: FRI 19.30
==== Documentation of Video on the Net Strategy====
Following the Transmission meeting in Rome, there is
this collaborative page which is in progress.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Video
We'll look at how how well these help pages, and
existing documentations help those seeking to
distribute their video work on the Net. And after
pooling ideas and resources, try to work out a plan to
make the existing resources better and more
accessible. Includes projects like NGO in a Box, and
the OurVideo toolkit, and other online documentation
projects.
* start time: FRI 13.00
* end time: FRI 14.00
==== Creating content for Online TV ====
While the technology is here, the level of quality of
online Tv are debatable. How can we create
independent, watchable and sustainable content week
after week? Amongst other things we'll tackle ideas of
Live Tv in this context, training [especially as a
catalyst for production] and Internet news.
* start time: SAT 9.00
* end time: SAT 10.30
==== Net Neutrality and Creative commons ====
What is net neutrality and what does it mean to us.
Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the
Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called
Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T,
Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work
best for you -- based on what site pays them the most.
What campaigns exist to counter this?
Creative Commons and online Video. How far have we
come. How effective has using creative commons been?
How can we make creative commons work for the Video
producers and create a needed revenue stream for them?
How does working with Creative commons content effect
the way we work collaboratively?
* start time: SAT 10.30
* end time: SAT 12.00
==== How Online Video Production and Collaboration can
Work. ====
Creating a DVD or a programme for Tv with a
decentralised production team communicating and
exchanging Video content, research and subtitles via
the Internet is now possible.
more info:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Convergence_and_collaboration_model
If there is interest at this gathering, we could pick
a specific theme or scope of the collaborative project
[DVD or online showcase], and set up a workflow and
tasks to be carried out.
* start time: SUN 11.30
* end time: SUN 12.30
==== Do no harm : Video activism and issues of
exploitation. ====
When coming together in the name of promoting online
media for 'social justice' etc, we have a
responsibility as organisations and individuals to pay
attention to what content we are collecting and
spreading and why; primarily to ensure that we're
protecting people..... above all, doing no harm.
Especially with more and more people inexperienced in
journalistic ethics now enabled to use online video
services, we are making an effort to develop and
spread awareness of certain basic principles such as -
Informed consent. If our projects stand apart from the
corporate media in theory and name, this should demand
a different, more ethical way of working in practice.
It is always going to be hard to achieve, let alone
enforce, any sort of consensus given cultural
relativity, non binding nature of guidelines etc, but
we do have to think seriously about the Licensing for
Sales and also Safety (both of which can be very
different in Europe and North America to the Global
South, and Ethical issues of dignity and
revictimization - especially in a cultural context of
open-ended Re-use and Remixing of 'activist' footage.
What can we do do help make sure that we are
protecting both the people featured in footage and the
people who produce such material, often at great
expense and risk to themselves?
* start time: SUN 10.30
* end time: SUN 11.30
* Any tools or preparation required: Please read
through the notes from re:transmission discussion on
these matters, look at Witness's website, think about
useful and realistic ways forward!
=== Skill Sharing Workshops ===
==== Metadata, what it can do. Why is it Important
====
A presentation on the importance of standardising
metadata to allow projects to use joint search and
distribution tools. The presentation will explain what
metadata is, what it can enable, and why it is so
important to the future of online video.
* start time: SUN 11.30
* end time: SUN 12.30
==== RDF Standardisation project presentation and
consultation ====
A presentation of a draft metadata standard to allow
selected participating projects to use joint search
and distribution tools.
A current concern for many media producers is to
better share the online video material they create
using available digital/networking technologies. A key
step in facilitating this process will be agreement on
means to organise content for easy access and
exchange. At the first Transmission meeting, which
took place in Rome in June 2006, it was agreed that
there was a need to develop some common metadata
standards that would enable coherent information
exchange.
http://www.transmission.cc/wiki/Notes_from_the_CMS_Collaboration_workshop
http://www.transmission.cc/wiki/notes_from_online_video_strategy_-_convergence_-_workshop
* start time: SUN 11.30
* end time: SUN 12.30
* Any tools or preparation required: participants
should understand the basics of metadata, RSS etc, and
be in a position to engage with the process of
agreeing and implementing standards on a practical
level.
==== Screenings Database working group ====
Using CiviCRM to create a Screenings Database of
venues and collective who are screening Independent
films. This can act as a valuable tool to visiting
film makers, or those wishing to distribute their
films to hard to find places.
* start time: SUN 15.00
* end time: SUN 16.00
==== Command line video encoding for Mac and Linux
====
Using command line applications like ffmpeg and
mencoder to encode video content. This may be a bit if
a jump for some users. However as more and more people
start to use linux, maybe it's time to forget the
often confusing graphical interfaces for encoding, and
embrace these very powerful tools.
* start time: SAT 10.30
* end time: SUN 12.00
==== Encoding Video on Windows using free software
====
With Windows still sadly enjoying the lions share of
the home market, it's important to be able to use free
software that work on Windows to encode Video for the
Internet. This is a no nonsense guide to do just that.
Includes
* Encoding to get your video ready for the internet,
xvid, mp4, wmv (!)
* Encoding from a DVD to a CD
* A Way of squashing a DVD with all menus etc down to
1GB size which is realistically downloadable to be
either played in media plauyer or expanded back to a
conventional DVD
* start time: SAT 10.30
* end time: SAT 12.00
==== Creating subtitle files and translating them.
====
The process for creating subtile file to create a
multi language DVD is straight forward and allows
people to use the Internet to collaborate on the
process. This workshop will deal with the issues of
creating a global network of volunteer film
translators. The workshop will be in 2 halves, one
theoretical and one practical.
* start time: SAT 9.00
* end time: SAT 10.30
==== Creating Media RSS channels [aka Podcasting ]
====
If you are hosting your video on the Internet then it
definately makes sense to have a RSS channel of
content available for your users. Some Content
Management systems [ways of hosting your information
online] do this automatically. What Video CMS's are
available for you to use? Or what are the solutions
for you if you don't want to change the way you are
hosting your video just yet.
* start time: SUN 10.30
* end time: SUN 11.30
==== Video CMS systems compared ====
A look at the different content management systems
that are being used to distribute Video over the
Internet. Participants will bring experience of using
and setting up Plone, Drupal, Broadcast Machine and a
variety of custom and customised systems. What is
working well now? What are the gaps? Can we
collaborate to make a better solution in the future?
Some tools used:
* Broadcast machine;
http://www.getdemocracy.com/broadcast/
* Drupal / Clearerchannel / Loud Blog etc.
* Plone
* start time: SUN 15.30
* end time: SAT 17.30
