Hi,
just a short notice for all the people who would like to have a
youtube like "preview" of videos.
a) it is not that hard to create the .flv video files from the orginal
videos we have, but i needs allot of CPU Power. At least one 64Bit Box
only doing this.
b) it will not work for all videos.
c) it needs allot of diskspace. the flv files are much larger then the
orginal videos
d) it needs allot more bandwidth (for the same reason as above)
e) you can not use bit torrent to distribute the downloads
At the moment we have 100G of Videos, converting them all to .flv
might tripple the needed diskspace to 400-500G.
You all know the great people from g8tv, they only where able to
provide the website because of a good internet connection.
One of the main mirror servers had a bandwidth usage of 180Mbit/s.
That was a mix of the flash videos and the ogg-video downloads of the
shows.
---------------------
Sure, it will be a nice feature, so how can you help to provide such a service?
a) organize your local video collective, get the people together and
get some money together
b) rent or buy a linux server or linux vserver on a 100Mbit Line (or
more). If possible, get a Flatrate.
c) share the server with your local tech collective and with us :)
d) if you have any question, send a mail to me or imc-tech, people
WILL help you to find the right server.
This is something EVERYONE can do. You just need a (valid) address and
a way to pay the bill.
Thank You!
