Hi all,
Not to introduce more layers of complexity to this conversation, but...
1. Doesn't make sense to me for anyone to spend time adding code to
existing video.indy CMS in order to give it flv transcode capability.
Why? Because there are other existing FOSS codebases (plumi, filmforge)
that are being actively maintained and developed by whole communities,
that already have this capability, and we are just about to choose one
to use for video.indy, as we've discussed on this list.
2. we've also talked about how existing video.indy will remain, by just
continuing at the other alias ivdn.indy. It will maintain focus on
distro of screening quality / full length stuff. Or, if no one is gonna
work on it, it could become an archive.
3. If any additional functionality is gonna be added to IVDN, I would
beg for THUMBNAILS. They don't even have to be autogenerated ;)
OK now that said, some other stuff to add to this thread...
>> a) it is not that hard to create the .flv video files from the orginal

For longer videos, especially for feature length, most people don't want
to watch the whole thing in the browser anyway. However, it's quite nice
to have in-browser previews so they can decide whether to spend hours
downloading the damn thing. This is usually handled 1. with trailers /
previews, produced by the filmmakers, so it's nice to give them an
option to upload the trailer along with the full film and just transcode
THAT, or 2. autogeneration of a 'trailer' by grabbing a frame every so
often, then making a flv out of THAT for viewing in the browser.
Archive.org does something like this.

Good thing 500G disks are now under $200 ;D

We have an offer from the Creative Commons folks to mirror...
Also, what about using archive?

We need to set up and test plumi and filmforge. Lotu5 is interested in
hosting plumi install in SD but it will be a few weeks. I think that
koumbit may be willing to host a test filmforge install, starting in
september. That's where we're at!
OK peace
