Dear Lee Siu Hin,
All of us on this list, as well as on the transmission list, are
dedicated to developing free and open source solutions for activist
video makers.
Currently, there are good communities of developers working to customize
the content management systems plone and drupal.
Video customized plone: http://plumi.org
Here's an example of plumi in action, UnionTube:
http://video.labornetjp.org/
Video customized drupal: http://filmforge.koumbit.net
There's always space for more FOSS video, it would be great if your
software development team would be in communication with the plumi and
filmforge teams (and others, via the transmission network) because many
of the challenges and solutions will be similar regardless of the CMS.
Are you customizing an existing CMS, or building everything from scratch?
As for your comment about activist videos on YouTube, there the problem
is more a social dynamic problem than a technological one. There are
already plenty of working alternatives for video uploading and hosting,
for example you can easily upload video to archive.org, indybay.org, or
any one of a number of activist / noncorporate sites and it will
automatically be converted to embeddable flash, etc.
However, people post their vids on YouTube because a) they don't know
about existing, working alternatives, and b) they want to reach the
millions of people who are watching videos on YouTube :)
Of course we want to educate people about how posting videos there 1.
exploits their free labor to gain ad revenue for Google, 2. puts them at
risk for surveillance and IP tracking, and 3. opens the door to
censorship since YouTube will do takedowns for copyright violations or
at the request of the State. However, people will keep posting there in
order to reach the audience.
Anyway, good luck with your efforts and please, especially the coders on
your project should be in touch with others in the FOSS video activist
community, so that we don't duplicate work.
peace
