I think you'll find that is what all these initiatives are also
doing. They are all open source and built on CMSs that have large
user/developer communities that are constantly growing. They also all
allow you to add any further functionalities you want. I'm not sure
what the advantage is of building a new system from scratch vs the
options that already exists.
