Hi all,
I'm an italian videomaker and I'd like to talk you about my ideas for
building up a tool for "indypendent" video-journalists,
The May's newsreal outreach message has made me think that my ideas
sould be told to you, 'cause if you're really searching for
collaboration it could be great gevin' peolple who collaborate some tool
(possibly open source) to use for collaborating with you.
If you don't have the time to read all my elucubrative reflections
please go down to the numbered point and you'll now what I'm
talkin'about without wastin' your precious time.
Firt of all I'd like to explain you from which experience these ideas
I'm goin' to tell you come from:
I've build some manual on covering faces on demonstration videos:
http://ch.indymedia.org/media/2007/12//55442.pdf
This manuals include instructions for both open and close source
software, to give a chance to every videomaker to build up a video of a
demostration in as less time as possible.
The relevant consequence of this pubblication was that videomakers of
italy, even the ones that used this manual for using cosed source
software for makin'their videos, have read the istruction and now know
about the existence and usability of open source software for building
videos.
I think that if imc-video starts building manuals with instructions on
how to manage videos during demonstrations people will feedback the
"gift" and will find out also more interactivelly (learning to use the
software) how this imc works in pubblishing videos.
In this particular point (pubblishing) we have to know that all'our
concorrents have great bandwich (like google video) and can manage more
friendly technical issues; I think the best thing we can do by now to
contrast the action of "bigs video publishers" is to offer instructions
and manuals based on our experience of video on demonstrations.
The other point is digital divide, it's an old school issue that we HAVE
to manage I think.
When steev (as any other person) encourage people to publish video, the
first thing he has to think in my point of view is to give the right
tool to people and to keep people conscious of what they are using.
Also in another perspective we can think of publishing and encourage
using a certain kind of tool, chosen from what we can find in open
source but also chosen for certain kind of quality they have.
Here in Italy on genoa 2001 the most important role of video activists
was to keep surveillance on police activities during demonstration.
In a way this have been very important in the institutional process to
give evidence of false statements of the police for example.
I think that in this cases it could be great to build up an internet
interface from which publish videos from mobile phones, this could allow
everyone from the parade to publish little sized videos of what happens
and could be great also to link that videos in the timeline of the event
(as Rostock's timeline).
Building an interactive tool to cover faces, add logo and cut/paste or
drag and drop editing on videos could be a long objective; It requires
some good machines and a bit of coding on cinelerra (cv.cinelerra.org)
code and interface.
I can manage the interface to work properly from internet but cannot
understand C so cinelerra's code (written in '90 so not very standard
code) is a stranger for me, but I'm building by now a computer farm (a
gift) with 3, dual core computers, so this third part of the project is
slowly goin'on.
This are the numers (and my proposal in short words):
_1 write manuals on how to manage videos during parades
_2 build an internet interface for pubblishing videos from mobile phones
_3 build a web 2.0 interactive tool to give chance to use open source
video editing code directly from the internet.
thanks
jilt
