Subject: [IMC-Process] SEATTLE'S RESPONSE TO IMC WOMEN'S PROPOSAL RE
NEW IMC
PROCESS
Date: 26 Oct 2003 12:09:38 -0800
Hi everyone,
This is a formal response of the IMC-Seattle collective to the proposal
from
the IMC-Womens list.
Summary:
Introductory letter:

Clarification:

We are in full support of this proposal. At the last general meeting
where
we discussed this again for the second time, several people expressed
how impressed
and inspired they were by the proposal and the fact that it was the
first such
proposal to come from a global working group.
We are also in the more important part of the process and that is
engaging in
the questions ourselves as an "already existing IMC" in terms of how we
can
improve issues of gender diversity in the IMC. This has always been a
challenging
topic for us and for other IMCs as we struggle to change the dynamics
within
our own groups to reflect our values and ideals.
Personal note: As someone who has been in the Seattle IMC for 4 years
(to the
day), I have seen us go through many different stages. I have been in
the
IMC when there were more women than men. I have been the only woman at
many
meetings. I have been a woman who has been silenced by male
facilitators in
numerous meetings where no other person spoke up. I have seen women
being
empowered by other women being strong. I have been inspired by seeing
once
quiet women speaking up. I have seen us shifting back and forth along
this
spectrum. We all have a lot of work to do to create the kind of
environment
where we respect all voices and we don't let the conditioning we've
been raised
with dictate how we relate to each other.

There has only been one response to this proposal and no formal
responses other
than the one from Seattle that I can find in the archives. I know that
some
women have brought these proposals to the women's list. We should get
those
to the process list so we know which IMCs have been discussing this
proposal.
Also, can someone from the women's list please give us a deadline for
this proposal
and can the moderators assist in the process of getting all the
liaisons on
this list to be making sure the proposal is sent back to their local
and discussed
and responses brought back here. This is what a liaison list is about.
And
the process list is supposedly our "decision-making space".
Thanks.
