Dear Sir or Madam,

Aotearoa Independent Media Centre  (AIMC) is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as a tool for promoting social and economic justice. It is our goal to further the self-determination of people under-represented in media production and content, and to illuminate and analyse local and global issues that impact ecosystems, communities and individuals. We seek to generate alternatives to the biases inherent in the corporate media controlled by profit, and to identify and create positive models for a sustainable and equitable society.

In Wellington, AIMC hosts a weekly one hour show on the VBC 88.3. The content is of a primarily local focus and features news stories and opinions that are usually neglected by the commercial media. We particularly endeavour to cover stories and events that affect groups often marginalised in New Zealand society including workers, Maori, women, Pacific Islanders, queers and immigrants.

We are grateful to the VBC for providing a media outlet for views otherwise unavailable on radio in Wellington. Unfortunately the low coverage of the current VBC frequency means that our show is inaccessible to most Wellington residents. We believe that making the VBC broadcast available to a larger area of Wellington would be of great benefit both to our organization and to the wider Wellington community.

The VBC 88.3 has shown a commitment to supporting a diverse range of musical and cultural communities in Wellington and emphasises content not available on other Wellington frequencies. We believe that increasing its broadcast’s coverage will be very beneficial to Wellington.
