[Italy-List] IndyVideo at G8 in Italy (2009)

The following is a request for the Upcoming G8 Summit in Italy. It is
translated in Italian, too. But it would make it easier for me if you
reply in English.

Hello, (Indy-/)Mediaactivists and Techpeople from Italy...

I am a Mediaactivist from Berlin and a part of Indy-Germany since 2001.
I`ve been working for several Video-Projects at G8-Summits the past
couple of years. Some of my footage was used for the Indy-Genova flick,
for the KanalB film about the G8 in 2001
(http://kanalb.org/edition.php?clipId=52&search=genua) and for G8-TV in
Rostock/Germany last year. I`m very looking forward to the G8 next year.

The G8-Summit in 2009 is just a half year ahead from now and will take
place in Italy, again. I /we from Indymedia Germany don`t know alot
about your mobilization and if either the Protest will be mobilized to
Sardegna or Naples. Sardegna, naturally doesn`t seem to be easy to get
to, but it`s also hard to get information (in English) about the
mobilization and where the "main Protest" will be.

So here is, what I want to ask you.

The past couple of months I questioned myself on what exactly I want to
focus on (in terms of producing Video-Footage). Just running around the
Streets and looking for interesting material/ riots is what I did for
Years and what coorporate-media is more or less focused on, too. In
view of the tendency that more and more people have their own
video-camera/ -equipment on protests it doesn`t seem absolute necessary
to me to get every conflict with the police in 10 (or more) perspectives.

We did alot of hard work setting up the alternative-media-centre in
rostock last year, as you guys did in "Scuola Pertini" in 2001. This is
absolute indispensable for giving the people the opportunity to make
grassroots-journalism possible and a main part of indymedia ever since.
I always respected the time and the work some people put into setting up
the IMC with all the barriers and complications and to hazard the
consequences of a possible raid. So I was thinking it probably would be
more interesting to work on this subject video-wise.

How do people work together and how is their work structured? How do
they communicate (dispatch) (... but also in a linguistic matter)? Who`s
providing what? Which public Organisations (NGO`s/ Cobas etc.pp. ...)
support the IMCenter during the process of setup/ protests? How is the
relationship with Corporate/ Mainstream- Media? and so on...

I know, that this is a sensitive part of the indy-infrastructure
(especially on campaigns), but i also think that it is possible to work
on such a video in a sensitive way. It also would give the people the
opportunity to see how much work it means to set up an antipole to the
corporate media and it, of course, would be the first film about what we
do during and before the hard times of such a big event. I was thinking
to come to Italy in March or April to accompany the process of setting
up the IMC, if you would be interested in such a project. (And if, of
course, i can save enough money to afford that ;) )

If you are interested, here is what I definetely would need:
One or more persons, who would agree to present themselves (with or with
blurred faces) on camera to give some explanations. a place to stay (at
least for a short while ...i got some contacts in torino, so i propably
might stay there most of the time but for traveling through italy).
maybe an english-speaking-person wich want to help me during interviews.
and, as most important, your ideas to make an interesting movie about
the work of indymedia/the IMC during the G8.

Salve, mediattivisti e personale tecnico di Indy-Italia

Sono un mediattivista di Berlino e faccio parte di Indy-Germania dal
2001. Ho lavorato a diversi progetti video durante i G8 degli ultimi
anni. Alcuni dei miei video sono stati usati per i filmati di
Indy-Genova, per il film di KanalB
(http://kanalb.org/edition.php?clipId=52&search=genua) sul G8 nel 2001 e
per la G8-TV a Rostock l'anno scorso. Non vedo l'ora di rimettermi
all'opera il prossimo anno.

Il summit del 2009 è tra giusto sei mesi e sarà nuovamente in Italia.
Noi/io di Indy-Germania non sappiamo ancora nulla della vostra
mobilitazione, né se il G8 si terrà effettivamente in Sardegna o a
Napoli. Se fosse in Sardegna, sarebbe molto difficile arrivarci, ma è
quasi impossibile trovare informazione (in inglese, ma non solo) sulla
mobilitazione e su dove si concentrerà la "protesta principale".

Questo è quello che volevo proporvi.

Negli ultimi mesi mi sono chiesto su cosa avrei voluto focalizzarmi (nei
termini di produzione di filmati). Girare per le strade e cercare
materiale interessante (sommosse) è quello che ho fatto per anni ed è
quello a cui si limitano più o meno anche i media commerciali.
Osservando la tendenza che più e più persone hanno una propria
videocamera (e a volte anche un'attrezzatura professionale) non mi pare
assolutamente necessario essere presente ad ogni conflitto con la
polizia per riprenderlo in dieci e più prospettive.

Noi abbiamo lavorato duro per mettere in piedi il centro mediatico
alternativo a Rostock l'anno scorso, seguendo l'esempio della "Scuola
Pertini" del 2001. Questo è assolutamente indispensabile per dare alle
persone la possibilità di fare "grassroots"-gionalismo, ed è inoltre da
sempre una delle parti principali di Indymedia.
Io ho sempre rispettato il tempo impiegato ed il lavoro svolto dalle
persone per costruire l'IMC, superando tutte le barriere e complicazioni
e affrontando i rischi e conseguenze di possibili irruzioni. Riflettevo
quindi se fosse più interessante lavorare su questa tematica.

Come lavorano le persone insieme e come strutturano il loro lavoro? Come
comunicano verso l'esterno, ma anche all'interno del gruppo? Chi si
occupa di cosa? Quale organizzazione pubblica (NGO`s/ Cobas etc.pp. ...)
sostengono l'IMCenter durante il periodo iniziale e delle proteste?
Qual'è la relazione con i media governativi e privati?

Sono cosciente che questa è una parte sensibile dell'infrastruttura
indymediana (specialmente durante periodi impegnativi), ma penso lo
stesso che sia possibile lavorare su un simile progetto in maniera molto
delicata. Questo darebbe anche la possibilità a tutti di avvicinarsi al
modo di lavorare del centro, di come costruire un polo opposto ai media
comuni e, naturalmente, sarebbe il primo film su cosa noi facciamo prima
e durante l'organizzazione di certi grandi eventi.
Stavo inoltre riflettendo sul fatto di venire in Italia a marzo o aprile
per accompagnare il processo di costituzione dell'IMC, nel caso ci fosse
l'interesse da parte vostra a questo progetto (e se i miei risparmi
fossero sufficienti ad affrontare le spese ;-) ).

Se siete interessati, ecco quello che vi serve per cominciare:
una o più persone, che si prestano a comparire (con o senza filtri
pixel) sul video per dare spiegazioni; un posto dove stare (almeno per
un periodo corto... ho qualche contatto a Torino, penso di stare lì la
maggior parte del tempo, quando non sarò in viaggio per l'Italia); forse
una persona con buone conoscenze d'inglese che mi aiuti durante le
interviste; e, come cosa più importante, delle idee per fare un film
interessante sul lavoro di indymedia e dell'IMC durante il G8.
