-----------------------------------------
Dear last international of tech activists,
in two weeks this year's G8 summit will (try to) take place in
Heiligendamm, Germany, and an action week filled with protests will
accompany and block it. We are preparing, setting up and maintaining
technological infrastructures for the protests and ask you to join us!
We chose your project because we either know you directly or have
heard only good things about you.
'We', that's a group of tech activists who are all involved in the
independant media centers and public internet access
spaces for the G8 protest in Rostock, the camps and
other places that are in context with G8 protests.
Systemausfall.org, so36.net, nadir.org & some free radical techies
formed a temporary tech collective, called 'techworx'. It is open to
other engaged techies and we would like to see at least delegates from
many other radical tech collectives getting involved in the process.
It took us a while to get to the point of being organized enough
to send this message to you. From now on, parts of us, if not all, are
present in Rostock and the surrounding areas. We hope you didn't fall
despair in the meantime. We are looking forward to support the
biggest wave of protests this country has seen in decades.
We invite you to join us to do tech work, tech support and
handle the complex situation we are facing. We'd like to make this an
international tech event, a project worked on by many tech activists
from many locations around the planet. Unfortunately, we cannot afford
to help with travel expenses so it will surely not be a really global
project, and this is a real pity. Nevertheless, we are looking forward
to meet those of you who will make it to Rostock during the anti G8
protests.
There will be two media centers in Rostock (the next largest city to
Heiligendamm): One is in the suburb "Evershagen" in an abandoned
school, which will also host some specialized groups, will welcome
protesters in a convergence center at the same location, and is a
place to prepare demonstrations and other things. It also features a
huge kitchen.
One of the camps is 25 minutes walking distance to Evershagen,
situated right at the River Warnow.
The other media center will be in the city center of Rostock. It is
placed in a similar building, a school used as college of arts and for
local alternative media. The regular users offered space for the
independant G8 media center. Here mostly video and radio will be
present, plus some public access. But this space is more regulated
than the school in Evershagen.
Then there are at least three camps for a couple of thousand people,
where some media access and production facilities are to be set up and
maintained.
To get things organized, we have set up a web forum. We would like you
to get in touch with us there. Several tasks need to be done and we
will use this forum to both communicate with you and to form groups
who will take care of these tasks and thus work towards a successful
anti G8 movement. If you dislike the idea of abstract tools, you may
contact us a bit more directly in our silc channel "techworx" at
silc.so36.net (see silcnet.org for software)
You find our forum here:
https://inventati.org/techboard
You can reach us all by email: techworx at nadir.org
(Write "X-SEND-PUBKEY" in the body of your first mail and you will
receive our public openPGP key)
We're looking forward to get in touch with you, meet you, and work
with you, tech activists from around the world, so that the voice of
dissent cannot be missed.
The area of possible activities includes things like network support,
hardware administration, desktop pc administration, streaming media,
asterisk server administration, cryptosms testing, tor experiences,
translations, coordinations, discussions, strengthening ties and fun!
One very concrete thing we want to communicate already: as by now it
looks like we do not have enough computers in Rostock and on the
camps. If you have some left you don't need back or need back (but no
guarantees of course), tell us!
Comps from piii on with min. 256 mb and standard hardware to run
easily under ubuntu/xubuntu is welcome! And 17 inch screens, too.
We will not be able to solve the transport issues, but as soon as the
comps are in Berlin or Hamburg, we can take care of them.
As there are people who try to organize general transport issues for
the protest, we will connect them with you in case this would solve a
transportation problem.
One practical advise in advance: if you plan to come, bring your
passport or ids, as local authorities will try to control any living
organism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (the federal state where we meet).
looking forward to do activist techwork with you,
the techworx people
