there's a patch ready that would allow list admins to adjust SpamAssassin
settings on a per-list basis.  it's difficult though, because we've so 
much spam that filtering more will bring a lot of false positives, so we
need to experiment.

there's a plugin we've been talking about that would allow one to make
the admin work with a pop3 interface, that may simplify administration
a lot.  We need to try it too.

last but not least, mtoups is ready to have fun with the new version of
spamassassin, which is supposed to be ways better and allow for some
statistical spam filtering.  again, we need to experiment.

at the same time, the difference between the amounts of spam of the last
days and the usual amount is all done by the current setup of spamassassin,
so yay to spamassassin.
