Hi,
This is to let people know that Indymedia UK have decided in principle
to buy a new server. Briefly, the idea is to buy a server and host it
in the UK. We think that there are disk access problems with Traven,
and we would like to temporarily mirror all Traven sites onto this new
server and run some experiments on Traven - kernel upgrades, and if that
doesn't work, probably disconnecting the hardware RAID card.

The pink times on this graph are times when Traven's processor is
waiting for the disks. This is what we'd like to try and fix.
Once Traven's disks are fixed, we would probably then want to move most
sites back to Traven, and keep hot backups of Traven sites on the new UK
server, ready to go in case of Traven problems or a seizure. Depending
on how it all works out, who wants to be hosted where, etc., this means
we should have some spare capacity on the new server, and also that
Traven should have more capacity because its disk access times will have
improved.
SOME QUESTIONS:
Does this sound like a good idea to people?
Do any of the sites on Traven have any trouble if they are temporarily
moved to the UK?
Do any of the sites on Traven want to be in the UK permanently rather
than in the US?
Does anyone have a better idea for what to do with a new server than
hosting more Mir installations?
Does the global network have a more pressing need that we could fulfill
with the new box?
Does anybody want to help admin the new box?
Do you have any questions about this idea?
Please let us know. It might be best to keep discussion of the new
server on imc-uk-tech, so everybody can see what everybody else is
thinking about this without looking at a whole lot of lists at the same
time.
Thanks,
Yossarian
