Hi New-IMC,

I was surprised and pleased to hear that a second imc-burma group is
happening. i did put it on the back-burner recently with personal health
issues.

can someone please forwards me their application to new-imc so that my list
imc-burma list can read it? maybe we can consolidate?

regards, kim

hi imc-burma list,

i and a group of about 20 ex-patriot burmese were organizing to set up an
imc-burma out of australia earlier this year. while i'm happy you guys
have done it (because none of us have any technical skills and were having
to ask around), did you take a look to see if their was an other imc-burma
in the pipeline? can we have a look at your application? i see from you
mailing list that you haven't been around long.

below is the text of my introductory email sent out in May. perhaps we
could consolidate the lists?

as you probably understand there is an issue within the burmese community
over who you can trust and anonymity (ie. what won't get back to burma,
where many have relatives).

please let me know your thoughts, because i am in touch with a lot of young
journos on the Thai-burmese border who are keen to start work.

Regards,

kim

Hi all,

just to let you know we are taking first steps to establish an IMC-BURMA
for Burmese journalists and activists in exile. My name is Kim and I am
working with Ying Tzarm from the Shan Women's Action Network at Community
Radio 4ZzZfm in Brisbane, Australia. We are also collaborating on a
Burma Indymedia. I am going to help get burma indy through the "hoops"
because I have done it with Brisbane indymedia. www.brisbane.indymedia.org

as you probably know, Burma has been under the dictatorship of a
military regime for many years and literally thousands of burmese
refugees are living in thailand in border refugee camps. with the
support of many international agencies, they have managed to survive,
and now a burgeoning independent/pirate media movement has arisen within
thailand. but things are not so safe there either: the thai govt has
recently taken to locking up some burmese activists in exile and is
making moves to establish trade links with burma. the UN will soon be
goign into burma to see to start repatriation of refguees. yet daw aung
sung sui kyi is still under house arrest and all communications
controlled by the military. huamn rights abuses including
extra-judicial killings, forced labour and military gang-rapes still occur.

we have secured hosing from nomasters in melbourne and the oceania-imc
crew have been very helpful. catalyst in sydney have set up a
communications list for us at:
http://lists.cat.org.au/cgi-bin/m/listinfo/burma-indymedia

we have established a network of about 30 volunteers to help start us
off. however, we are lacking in skills.

***we REALLY need a geek who can help with the technical side of
things. if someone can offer to set up our test site while we work on
the written process, we would be SO grateful! :) we can probably look
after any small tweaks from there.

regards,

kimk
