Hello,
Friends, Boud,
Thanks for raising this subject. My last report on it was in March 2007,
here:
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/new-imc/2007-March/0324-ci.html
The summary is: there was nothing done in that direction. We have been
ignored. The decisions of the new-imc regarding its own
self-organization are subject to an invisible mechanism within imc that
is able to defy the work-group, and not be accountable to anyone.
Additionally:
There were a number of severe personal accusations and political slander
levelled against me by members of this list in the weeks preceding the
February decision that Boud refers to above. I feel insulted and
humiliated by that approach, and there was never an apology or a denial
of those statements. My credibility and my ability to help as a member
of the new-imc list suffered greatly, I feel, as a result of those
statements.
Those statements issued from my approach to dealing with the candidate
status of imc-Palestine, and imc-Darwin, plus a few more situations into
which the hostility had "spilled over".
Those statements were never retracted.
If I am to resume any work as a volunteer/helper on new-imc I would like
to have my status here cleared: there's no way to do any of this work
without trust. In both directions. Even more so if I were to be helping
as a list admin.
This applies to all of us, it is not about "me, me, me". The landscape
needs to be examined for levels of trust, reputation, credibility, etc.
for everyone, and in my case, there needs to be some repair done.
At the center of various conflicts where unprincipled hostility was
aimed at me - what is directly or indirectly often attacked - is my
belief that the work of new-imc is the building of political
relationships. It is not to just check off items on a form-letter, but
to use the elements in our application forms (the questions and
responses) to engage with the new (candidate) groups into a dialogue
pointed toward building a relationship. That relationship should be able
to generate collaboration between the various local and global imc
groups, and be founded on enough trust that will enable our bonds to
withstand the heat of conflict that we encounter together in the
struggle: we *are* engaged in a global movement for social-political
change by both reform and revolution - the movement includes situations
of open war and more "quiet" day-to-day struggle within civil society
against the Corporations and the authoritarian State. The bonds we build
between us need to be able to withstand the erosion and losses generated
by friction and conflict with our global class enemy.
The new-imc group is still the only one of the global imc work-groups
that retains some sort of process, some co-operation and accountability;
none of the other global groups have remained true to their mission or
to the terms of engagement. We were able to maintain new-imc level of
functionality to a high degree because we paid attention to some
principles, for several years from its beginning. When we abandoned
those principles, the quality of our work declined, and new-imc began to
resemble the dysfunction of other global imc groups.
In order to regain our previous quality we need to return to some basic
principles that contribute to trust such as transparency, direct
democracy, open dialogue and informed participation. Within a climate
determined by such elements, work can be done at high quality, and even
disagreements can take on a meaningful role and be experienced positively.
I mention all these because the issue of list admin is intimately linked
to everything we do (or fail to do) together as a group. It is not a
mere matter of getting a password sent from one account to another, but
it involves returning to the basic principles of indymedia work
*primarily* focused on a social-political mission. The project demands
of us a higher level of involvement.
Thanks very much for reading all this and being mindful of these concerns.
Thanks!
Petros
