PROTESTS IN LIVERMORE, AND NATIONWIEDE, TO DEMAND ABOLITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
60th anniversaries of atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to be marked in US

August 6th and 9th will be National Days of Action to mark the 60th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. On August 6th at 6:30pm there will be a vigil at the Aquatic Park in Berkeley and a protest will be held in Livermore.

WORDS AND SCENES FROM SCOTLAND AND SAN FRANCISCO
Indybay and AK Press to sponsor G8 video screening on August 6th

On Saturday August 6th, there will be a video screening and reportback from the G8 Protests in Scotland and San Francisco. The event will take place in the AK Press Warehouse in Oakland. The doors will open at 7pm and videos will start at 7:30pm.AK Press will have an open house during the event.

DA DROPS FELONY CHARGES AGAINST MARIBEL CUEVAS
Struggle for police accountability in Fresno continues

In light of grassroots community organizing, pressure on local police, and people making connections between the Maribel Cuevas case and larger issues of police brutality, the Fresno Police have dropped the felony assult charges against 11-year old Maribel Cuevas.

ALAMEDANS ORGANIZE TO STOP MEGAPLEX IN THEIR CITY
Alameda residents want to keep island’s small-town character

A protest was held in Alameda on Saturday July 23rd to say "NO!" to the idea of building a megaplex on the island. The city has a plan to build a seven-screen cinema and a six-story parking structure next door to the historic Alameda Theater. The issue continues to be debated at the Alameda City Council.

SUPREME COURT TOWN HALL MEETING AND MARCH
Town Hall organizers say: “Californians need to know – no rubber stamp”

On Wednesday, August 3rd, a Supreme Court Town Hall Meeting and March were held in San Francisco. 
The record of John Roberts, President Bush's nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, has raised concern amongst advocates of women's health and privacy, protection of the environment, and civil rights. The Town Hall meeting included information about Roberts and what his impact on the Supreme Court and the people of California would be.

INDYMEDIA SEIZURE DOCUMENTS UNSEALED
U.S. and Italian government documents released ten months after Indymedia sites taken offline

8/1/2005: A number of Italian and U.S. government documents related to the seizure of Indymedia server "Ahimsa" from the UK have been unsealed by order of the federal court in San Antonio, Texas. 
On Thursday, October 7, 2004, more than 20 Independent Media Center (IMC) websites and other Internet services were taken offline after webhost Rackspace received a "Commissioner's Subpoena" for Indymedia's website logs.

WAL-MART ACTION PLANNING MEETING SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 2ND
Wal-Mart may open new Oakland store in August

Just Cause reports that Wal-Mart is scheduled to open in East Oakland around August 24th. Just Cause and the coalition fighting Wal-Mart are making plans to let the public know what impact Wal-Mart has on communities, and to make it known that they want Wal-Mart to leave Oakland.

BERKELEY WORKER-OWNER BAKERY SEEKS COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Nabolom Bakery faces closure due to debt; Town Hall Meeting held

Nabolom Bakery is one of the oldest collective businesses in Berkeley, and it will close on September 1st unless it can raise $50,000. Nabolom has supported progressive causes for years- by distributing pastries, hosting events, and hosting community artists' work, and providing free WiFi access. Nabolom has provided decent jobs with maximum worker control over conditions to dozens of activists in many political movements.
