!hola! ... bien, fuimos a fremont el sabado a la noche a hacer las mejoras
enviadas
antes esta semana. lamentablemente, nos vimos en un problema grande--
compramos 1GB de memoria pero Hugo pero no aceptaba nada mas de
256MB. Hugo tambien se colgo dos veces al reiniciarlo y no sabemos el por
que.

Esto nos hizo ver a mi, espe y noah que:
1) Hugo es chatarra y tenemos que sacarlo de servicio.
2) hemos alcanzado la capacidad sobre estos servidores usados.
durante 4 anos, nosotros hemos negociado/comprado servidores y partes
de servidores usadas/donadas y todos hemos pagado el precio por esto.

Entonces, tenemos un plan de solucionarlo. esto incluye la adicion de nuevos
servidores y nosotros vamos a usar bastante dinero en la compra de un nuevo
y reluciente
servidor 2U de un comercio revendedor de hardware local (o quizas
construyamos nuestro propio servidor con todas partes nuevas).

El plan en si mismo implicara tiempo de inactividad de los servidores
previsto para el viernes, 25 de marzo por la manana (10AM - 1PM (-8GMT).
Todos vamos a pedir el dia en nuestros trabajos para ir y
solucionar todos los problemas con todos los servidores de linefeed.

los requisitos minimos para todos los nuevos servidores seran:
1) STRAY - 2- 80GB discos con raid-1, sin disco de sistema, 1GB de RAM,
           Pentium 4, 2 NICs

2) HUGO - 2- 200GB discos con raid-1, 2GB de RAM, Pentium 3, 2 NICs

3) NUEVO aun sin nombre, servidor de archivos/backups - Dell PowerVault 705N
Network
           appliance con 4- 80GB discos con raid-5, mirar

4) BLACKCAT - desconocido actualmente, disco de sistema re-instalado y
nosotros
              sacaremos el directorio /home del NFS de HUGO

5) NUEVO servidor de linefeed sin nombre hospedada en la oficina de IMC San
Francisco - servidor IRCD


Nuestros pensamientos sobre esto es que debemos hacer una "limpieza" y
conseguir que las
partes sean de calidad, nuevo hardware corriendo todos con el nuevo FreeBSD
5.3
instalados todos con al menos raid-1 + backups todas las noches al servidor
#3.
Tambien, nos gustaria instalar NAGIOS o alguna otro sistema de
monitorizacion para
los servidores.


Hablaremos de esto a lo largo de la semana en el canal #sfkids de
irc.indymedia.org
** Por favor comenten sobre el dia y tiempo previsto de inactividad y las
nuevas configuraciones.
** Si hay algo que les gustaria cambiar, ahora es el tiempo para decirlo!!
** Esperamos que invirtiendo el tiempo y el dinero en hacer esto ahora
mismo,
podremos funcionar bien por los proximos 12 meses. ese es el objetivo, al
menos :)

Tambien, vamos a invertir mucho de nuestro dinero personal en
estos sistemas, entonces CUALQUIER contribucion monetaria puede ayudarnos.
Vamos a intentar mantener toda la contabilidad transparente, entonces cada
uno
puede conocer los gastos.

bien, eso es todo. Lamentablemente asi fueron las cosas, definitivamente no
quisimos
tomar una decision apresurada y que estropeara las cosas.
Tomandonos estos dias y haciendolo correctamente, esperamos estar bien por
un largo tiempo.

hello... well, we went to fremont tonight to make the upgrades sent
out earlier this week. unfortunately, we ran into a big problem --
we bought 1GB of ram but hugo would not recognize anything above
256MB. hugo also hung twice on reboot and we don't know why.

this caused a great realization for me, espe and noah:
1) hugo is junk and we need to get it out of the mix
2) we have reached capacity on these used boxes. for 4 years now, we
have traded/bought used/hussled servers and server parts and we have
all paid the price.

so, we have a plan to solve it. this includes the addition of some new
servers and we're going to drop a bunch of money on just buying a
nice, new 2U from a local commercial hardware reseller (or perhaps
build our own with all new parts).

the plan itself will involve scheduled downtime this Friday, March 25
in the morning (10AM - 1PM GMT-8). we're all going to call off work
to go and fix all the problems with all the linefeed servers.

the minimum requirements for all new boxes will be:
1) stray - 2 80GB drives with raid-1, no system drive, 1GB RAM,
           Pentium 4, 2 NICs

2) hugo - 2 200GB drives with raid-1, 2GB RAM, Pentium 3, 2 NICs

3) new unnamed file/backup server - Dell PowerVault 705N network
           appliance with 4 80GB drives with raid-5, see

4) blackcat - unknown exactly, system drive re-installed and we
              will take the /home directory off of NFS to hugo

5) new unnamed linefeed box hosted at sf-imc office - ircd server

our thoughts on this are to do some "spring cleaning" and get things
set up reasonably with quality, new hardware all running new FreeBSD
5.3 installs all with at least raid-1 + nightly backups to box #3. in
addition, we'd like to set up nagios or some other server monitoring
system.

we'll be discussing this throughout the week on #sfkids -- please give
feedback regarding the time scheduled for downtime and the new
configuration. ** if there is something messed up that you would like
to be fixed, now is the time to say so!! ** we are hoping that by
investing time and money in doing this right now, we can be set for
the next 12 months. that's the goal, at least :)

also, we are going to be investing a lot of our personal money into
this setup, so ANY monetary contributions can help. we're going to try
to keep all accounting transparent so everyone can know the costs
involved.

ok, that's it. sorry it went like this, we definitely did not want to
rush a solution and mess things up. taking these days and doing it
right, we hope to be set for a long time.
