| Sunday the 15th, a plebiscite in Venezuela will decide whether or not
| president Hugo Chávez will remain in power. The plebiscite was called by
| the Coordinadora Democratica a right wing coalition of business, unions
| and civil society organizations who opposes the government of
| Venezuela's elected president. The plebiscite was called with the
| signatures of over two million Venezuelans in a very polarized political
| process with heavy charges of fraud from both sides.

| Venezuela is facing a deep and continued crisis after military
| lieutenant-colonel Hugo Chávez Frías who tried a failed coup d'etat in
| 1992 was elected in 1998 and started a program of reforming the state
| and the constitution to concentrate power and promote social changes. A
| very violent reaction of Venezuela's traditional elites resulted in a
| defeated coup d'etat in April 2002 and a lockout (closing down of
| business by employers) in December of the same year to force Chávez to
| resign. In 2003, the opposition, in accord with Venezuelan constitution,
| gathered 2,451,821 signatures to call a plebiscite to decide whether
| Chavez should remain in office or new elections be called. The
| plebiscite is expected to be surrounded by violence and fraud.
