dear all,

three days ago a Duthc activist has been shot in the netherlands, but
nobody knows why.
the dutch indymedia collective has been asked specifically to keep
things calm and not to give space to speculations, and we respect that.
the only article we have is the statement of friends and family and a
condoleance page - plus a strict policy to hide all kind of rumours flying.

we would like to post the statement (with its english translation) on
the global site. the only link should be to the list of his articles but
nothing else at the moment. I will keep a very close eye on the comments
under this article and apply the same strict rules as we do on this
issue on the dutch page. I hope that's okay.

"This is the statement of the friends and family of Dutch activist Louis
Séveke, who was shot dead by an unknown gunman in his home town Nijmegen,
the Netherlands on 15 November.

We are deeply shocked by the death of our brother, brother-in-law and friend
Louis Séveke.

We know Louis as a committed and dear person of great integrity. He
expressed his dedication to social issues sharp and direct. But, his
passionate way of discussing was always accompanied by respect and a
consideration. His death leaves us deeply hurt.

Louis came to Nijmegen as a student. In the mid-eighties he became active in
the squatting movement and developed himself as an activist. From the
nineties on he focussed on legal support for fellow-activists. On their
behalf Louis issued complaints and initiated cases. He had a leading role in
the Vereniging Steunpunt Inzage PID, that campaigned for opening files
concerning activists of the old Dutch secret service, the BVD. As well he
researched and published about developments in intelligence and security
services. Louis also had an active role in legalising the local squat the
Grote Broek. In recent years he spent much time to support youth, homeless
and activists with complaints about police behaviour.

We have no insight into the circumstances of Louis's death, its reason or
the perpetrator. We therefore do not want to speculate. Questions on this
matter can be put to the police and the prosecutor, who have started a large
investigation."

Hierbij de verklaring van de vrienden en familie van Louis Seveke




diep geschokt zijn we door de dood gisteravond van onze broer, zwager en
vriend Louis Séveke.

Wij kennen Louis als een integere, betrokken en lieve persoon. Zijn
betrokkenheid bij maatschappelijke zaken uitte hij scherp en direct. De
bevlogen manier van discussiëren ging echter altijd gepaard met respect
en een evenwichtige blik. Zijn dood laats ons getroffen achter.

Louis kwam als student naar Nijmegen. Midden jaren tachtig werd hij
actief in de kraakbeweging en ontwikkelde zich als activist. Vanaf de
jaren negentig richtte hij zich vooral op juridische ondersteuning voor
activisten. Voor hen diende Louis klachten in en voerde procedures. Hij
had een voortrekkersrol in de Vereniging Steunpunt Inzage PID, die
ijverde voor inzage in dossiers van activisten bij de voorloper van de
AIVD, de BVD. Tevens deed hij onderzoek naar, en publiceerde over
ontwikkelingen bij inlichtingen- en veiligheidsdiensten. Louis had ook
een actieve rol bij de legalisatie van kraakpand de Grote Broek. De
laatste jaren was hij veel bezig met het begeliden van jongeren,
daklozen en activisten die een klacht hadden over politieoptreden.

Wij hebben geen zicht op de toedracht van Louis' dood, de reden of de
dader. Wij wnesen daarover ook niet te speculeren. Met vragen hierover
kunt u zich tot Politie en Justitie richten, die een uitgebreid
onderzoek gestart zijn.
