[activist] the whole world is watching!
[activists] his hand is broken! he's got a broken hand! get off of him. get
off of him, his hand's broken! he's got a broken hand. what did he do to
you. he's got a broken hand!
[cop] back up now
[activist] you have weapons, we don't.
[cop shoots taser, running.]
[activist]: medic! medic!
back! back!
This is what democracy looks like
That is what a police state looks like
a completely peaceful demonstration in which people are being provoked and
are not responding to the provocation. In which the police are pushing them
and pushing them with no place to go, and we do not respond, and back up
peacefully.
Shame! shame! shame!
N20: LABOR RALLY AND MARCH
[title] November 20, 11am. AFL-CIO arrives at Biscayne Blvd.
[workers] just say no to the WTO!
Everybody here is all fired up for this, we've all got the right attitude.
I'm a little worried about those guys.
They believe that there's a high probability that once their rally begins at
noon, the police are gonna begin their sweep of the streets to clear
everybody out. That time is about 35 minutes from now. You're all welcome
inside there, if you want to participate in the labor rally and march, join
the AFL-CIO and other unions inside the amphitheater.
Are you ready to let em know how we feel about FTAA? Are you ready to tell
Bush that we don't want any FTAA? On behalf of the AFL-CIO and the
industrial union council, and all of its affiliates, I want to thank the
alliance of retired Americans for helping us mobilize for all of our
activities here this week. And when we defeat FTAA, and we will defeat FTAA,
It'll be because current workers and retired workers came together in
solidarity and sent a loud, clear message to the leaders of 34 countries
that are assembled here, no FTAA! not now, not next week, not next month.
God bless you brothers and sisters, keep on fightin.
You know what I woke up to this morning? I woke up to the sound of
helicopters. Lemme tell ya. They can stop our buses, and they can try to
keep our people out, they can harass us with more cops than we could ever
believe, they can try to stop our people from getting in, but they sure as
hell can't stop our movement for social and economic justice for the workers
of the Americas.
Sisters and brothers, this is a fight not just for economic justice, but
clearly from what you can see in the streets of Miami today, this is a fight
about whether or not we'll have democracy if we have an FTAA. Let me tell
you that today, just a few hours ago, steelworker retirees trying to get
into this amphitheater were thrown to the ground. A woman by the name of
Sheri Hogan, the wife of one of our members, was made to lay on her face on
the pavement and they put a gun to her head and told her not to move. They
can do whatever they want with their god damned guns but they will not stop
our movement. They will not stop us from getting the justice that we
deserve. We should stick that gun right up his ass!
Are we ready to march? Are we ready to march?
[guitar plays, lyrics]:
I grew up in a company town
And I worked real hard ‘'til that company closed down
They gave my job to another man
On half my wages in some foreign land
And when I asked how could this be
Any good for our economy?
I was told nobody cares
So long as they make money when they sell their shares
Can you hear us? Are you listening?
No power without accountability!
I lost my job, my car and my house
When ten thousand miles away some guy clicked on a mouse
He didn’t know me, we never spoke,
He didn’t ask my opinion or canvass for my vote
I guess its true, nobody cares
'Til those petrol bombs come spinning through the air
Gotta find a way to hold them to account
Before they find a away to snuff our voices out
Can you hear us? Are you listening?
No power without accountability!
The ballot box is no guarantee that we achieve democracy
Our leaders claim their victory when only half the people have spoken
We have no job security in this global economy,
Our borders closed to refugees but our markets forced open
The World Bank says to Mexico,
We’ll cut you off if you don’t keep your taxes low
But they have no right to wield that sword
‘Cos they take their orders from the chairman of the board
IMF, WTO,
I hear these words just every place I go
Who are these people? Who elected them?
And how do I replace them with some of my friends?
Can you hear us? Are you listening?
No power without accountability!
[interview]
we're from local 201 of the IUECWA in Lynn, Massachusetts. I represent
workers at a factory in Wilmington Massachusetts that's been directly
affected by NAFTA. 3 years ago the company gave us a transfer of work
notice, a 6 month transfer of work notice to move work to Renosa, Mexico.
That's taking about half of my work force out of the factory and is
exploiting workers down in Renosa at six dollars a day wages. They're firing
young women in the factory as soon as they learn that they're pregnant. And
as a matter of fact, we recently learned over the past few months that the
workers there were too expensive for our corporation and they're moving the
Mexico work to Shanghai, China. People in this country of course are
fighting for their jobs, and when they find out that their jobs are being
given to people that are being further exploited, that really pisses them
off, you know, that just really pisses them off. We're looking for fair
trade, not free trade the way they have it set up now.
[chant] Free trade sucks! Free trade sucks! free trade sucks!
It sucks! It sucks! It sucks like shit!
SECRET WEAPON
The police may have had the upper hand on "security..."
We had a secret weapon
[sign]: make trade fair
[voice]: we're struggling to make trade fair. we're out here and there seems
to be a pretty big police barricade to try to stop us.
'we want fair trade! we want fair trade!'
[crowd] go ninja! go ninja!
[police picks up ninja by the head]
[activist] special ops got him!
the ninja! set him free! he belongs to the people!
[police] next time he doesn't get send back
[chant] down down with the FTAA! up, up, with what the people say!
AFTER THE MARCH: BRUTALITY ON BISCAYNE
[chant] shut it down! shut it down! shut it down!
[sign] Fear Totalitarianism, find Another Administration
[police megaphone]
ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. As long as the demonstration
remains peaceful, you will be allowed to demonstrate. If there's any
violence, the demonstration will end immediately.
[lady]: what about police violence? what about police violence? if there's
violence by the police what's gonna happen?
[police] as long as the demonstration is peaceful, you will be allowed to
demonstrate. If there is violence, the demonstration will end immediately.
Thank you.
[lady] the police are the only people here who've been violent.
[police chanting]: Back! back! back! back!
[activist] where was the violence?
[police start shooting]
[chant] whose streets? our streets! whose streets? our streets!
[fire in the street, chant:] this is what a police state looks like!
[lady] what are you doing? it's one fire. it's distorting the news.
my name's Elizabeth Ritter, I practice law in Miami since 1989, my family's
been here since 1924. For the first time in my life I'm truly ashamed of the
City of Miami. Miami's seen a lot of things, riots. Lemme tell you these
college kids never walked up to a kid playing a video game and blew his head
off, the way these police officers did.
There are a lot of people, in suits like myself, business people, small
business people, who would have liked to have been here supporting these
idealistic college students who aren't keeping their conscience in their
wallets like most of the rest of the people. But we were intimidated and
made fearful of coming here, not by the protesters but by the police. The
fear of god has been struck into the business community in Miami, that if we
don't close our offices, we will be hurt.
The police have turned the city of Miami into a police state.
Tell me if they're coming, OK?
Did you shoot me? did you shoot me? A lady in a suit who's been walking
peacebly in front of you for half an hour, you shot me when my back was
turned?
[protester] owww! what the fuck was that? why did you do that to us? he shot
me in the ass.
[lady] fuck you!
[activist] you hit her in the face! you hit her in the face!
INFOWAR
Once again a live look here at some of the demonstrators that are arriving
here that are staying within that compound. Now throughout the day today we
have seen vehicles pulling up, vehicles leaving. The demonstrators make the
point here that they will not be violent, that in fact all they want to do
here is go down and have their voice heard, but they do also make the point
they believe the media is an arm of the government, that the FTAA will also
cause problems for the media, and as you can see over here, we actually have
one of the protesters, one of the demonstrators, who is even filming our
live shot right now saying he wants to make sure there is fair coverage.
Information warfare
[p] move back behind this line right here. you can take all the pictures you
want just back up over here, OK?
[a] can you tell us what's going on here?
[p] stand right here.
[a] please don't push...you can't...you're pushing my camera, man
[p] sir, if you get up on me again, I'm gonna have to
[a] we're press here. can I have your badge number, sir?
[p] I beg your pardon?
