NUMBER OF MURDER OF INDIANS RISES AND PEOPLE ARE RUNNING RISK OF GENOCIDE

In the last three years, 127 indians were murdered in Brazil, 50 of these in
Mato Grosso do Sul.* *The information is from the report "The Violence
Against Indian People in Brazil", announced by the Missionary Indianist
Council (CIMI) on May 31st. According to the antropologist Lúcia Rangel, the
establisher of the studies, the situation of the Guarani-Kaiowá in Mato
Grosso do Sul, where 29 indians were killed only in 2005, may be
characterized as genocide.

Many of these deaths were ordered. The report also shows a rising in the
numbers of murder attempts, death threats, body hurt, sexual violence and
indians' land invasions.

The report also affirms that 17 indian etnies in the brazilian territory
suffer of genocide acts. The principal responsible for the rising of this
threat in the last years is the front of the brazilian agricultural border
expansion that recently arrived in Amazonia.
