HOMELESS CAMP IN FRONT OF CDHU IN SÃO PAULO



Today, June 6th, around 51 families of the Movement of the Homeless Worker
of the Central Region (MTST-RC) were cleared out of the occupation located
on Mooca Street, 720. This is the seventh time that these families are being
cleared out.  The only direction the City Hall gave was offering help to buy
the tickets for the families to return for their hometowns or hostelry. For
Hamilton, one of the residents, the "hostelry desagregates the family, the
movement has worked to build up the citizenship of these people".



The building was occupied in January 2006, at first just 36 families lived
in the place. The most part of the residents work with recyclable materials,
just 5 to 10% of the residents have formal jobs. The mayor did not designate
a place to lead the families, as hostelry was not an option for the
residents, whom  then decided to camp in front of the CDHU (Company of
Devolopment of Habitation and Urbanism) joining themselves  to around 100
families that already were in that place.



These people, connected to the Movement of Defense and Living (MDM),
occupied the bulding in Consolação Street, in June 2nd, being expeled in the
same day by the Military Police. The MDM and MTST-RC try to pressurize the
public force to make available an "instant attending and an habitational
program, as the low profit families are excluded from the already existant
ones".
