Journalist is released after seven and half months in prison



Josh Wolf, video activist and independent journalist, was arrested in San
Francisco, California for not accepting to turn over his videotapes of a
manifestation against the War in Iraq on July 2005. During the
manifestation, that stopped the city for 3 days, asking for the end of
USAoccupation in
Iraq, a policeman got injured by some activists in the protest resulting in
an investigation by the San Francisco Police. However, straight after it was
forwarded to the FBI, who took over the process. The FBI agents asked Josh
Wolf to turn over his unpublished videotapes, claiming that they would be an
important proof for the case.



Wolf, calling upon his journalistic right of not having to reveal his source
material, denied giving them to the FBI and was arrested for such. Seven and
half months in prison made Josh Wolf the journalist that has been in jail
for the longest time in the U.S. history for protecting source material. The
reason for such long time was always that the videotapes were valuable
evidences for the investigation regarding the aggression during the 2005
manifestation.



After his release a manifestation was organized in front of the San
Francisco City Hall and Wolf himself, on the City Hall stairs, published in
his blog the videotapes with following comments:



"During this course saga I offered repeatedly that I would allow a judged to
analyze if any videotapes had value as proof for the case. Today, the public
will have the opportunity to evaluate and I am sure you will see, as I have
seen, that there is nothing valuable on my videotapes which, until now, have
not been published."
