ZAPATIST PEOPLES MEET THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD

Defying the repression by the government and the besieging media
against the Oaxaca Peoples' Popular Assembly (APPO), and answering to
an international solidarity call by the Zapatist Army of National
Liberation (EZLN) for the end of the repression on Oaxaca, for the
releasing of the political prisoners of Atenco and for the punishment
on the perpetrators of the 1998 Acteal massacre, activists from around
the world have taken pacific actions at Mexican consulates and
embassies on December 22nd, anniversary of the Acteal massacre.

In São Paulo, around 100 activists from several social and political
organisations headed to the Mexican consulate, where a satirical
action was staged and two letters condemning the repression on Oaxaca,
Atenco and Acteal were delivered to the consul. Despite the heavy
rain, the action stood steady towards its goal. Cities around the
world have staged similar actions at Mexican diplomatic offices.

While, according to polls, the governmental repression on APPO enjoys
a high level of internal support - which stuns the world left and
Human Rights organisations - the leftist Democratic Revolution Party
(PRD), which had challenged the usurping president Felipe Calderón
(FECAL) with the motto "to hell with the institutions!", has now given
clear signs of changing its confrontational tactics, and seeks to set
itself apart from the radical left by signing deals with the
government, such as the talks regarding the 2007 military spending.
The same party which months ago had promised to resist the polls
afflicted by fraud by the National Action Party (PAN) changes its
tactics and discourse. One of the reasons to this change is explained
by Héctor de la Cueva, coordinator of the Centre for Labour Research
and Trade Union Advice: "most people are pragmatic and since they
don't see it [the PRD] as a real government option, they've withdrawn
their support". With the PRD capitulation to the government, the APPO
relies on support by the civil society at home and abroad.
